Brown acquired his 6th yellow of the Championship season today versus Accies. Looks like he’ll miss Dundee, unless they snuck in the expansion to 12 before suspension after 18 matches. |

Looked through the rules and I didn’t see the expansion of yellow rule this year, so I think Brown is indeed out for Friday’s match…
EDIT: I’m wrong, it’s the first match 14 days after the sixth…so he misses ICT at SP on then28th.
Re-edit: The SPFL Laws don’t list the expansion to 12 yellows for a suspension after 18 matches, but the 2022-2023 JPP manual does, so Brown does not get suspended. |

So let’s see where we’re at…
1) Keepers - Solid.
Out of contract at seasons end: MacDonald, Thomson
2) Defenders - Solid starters, hope Ngwenya is back quickly to provide a little extra options. If Ngwenya is a loss, then I think we have to keep Young at SP rather than out on loan again. If Ngwenya comes back, Masson becomes loanable, but I’m not sure we can loan both Masson and Young at the same time. O’Riordan returning would make Masson loanable regardless.
Out of contract at seasons end: Dick, Lang, Masson, Nolan and Young
3) Midfield - Starters are good, but depth has vanished. Stanton, what’s the deal…could be season defining if he ends out out after a scan. Ross, absent, talk of abdominal issues, and now awaiting a shot…we need to have certainly with him, as he provides a useful option when on his game. Matthews, the reality is he’s done for the year, since he’s return is estimated as April, he’ll never round into playing shape. Arnott, looked good playing at this level early, but hasn’t worked at Brechin, and isn’t getting playing time. Bring him home and let’s see what’s happened…is he wrong for Brechin’s scheme or has he regressed.
Out of contract at seasons end: Spencer
4) Forwards/Wingers - Vaughan, still not back to game form, however looking pretty decent as playing time increases. Gullan, miscast as a CF/Striker, needs to play off another attacker. Frederiksen, haven’t really seen enough of him…same to be said of McBride and Mahady. Connell, hard worker, does the dirty, hard work well but can’t get the ball in the net…maybe paired with Gullan as on of two attackers he could form something…but is out of contract Tuesday, 10/1/23. Connolly, gold. Mitchell, unknown.
Out of contract at seasons end: Connell(?), Connolly, Frederiksen, Mahady, McBride, Mitchell. |

If we thought this season was hard for replacing players, it looks like next season could be even worse if some or all of these out of contract decide to go elsewhere, and that's after taking into account the behind the scenes turmoil with finances |

Honestly, I’m concerned about poaching. Lang, Dick, Spencer, Connolly and Thomson are all prime to be poached off our roster. We do not have replacements for any of those except Thomson…and, as others have noted, MacDonald is looking a wee bit slower and a little more injury prone this year. Nolan is young for his position, has been starting, and is out too.
There’s also the young lads, with Young and Mitchell both on expiring deals and capable of playing every week in at least League Two, and Masson having not been given a chance for us to see him and know if he’s worth keeping. Mahady is probably to be let go, but also has been given no chance. |

Will we start to hear of some of our best players ( from those out of contract at the end of the season) being signed elsewhere on pre - contract agreements?
Players may like playing for The Rovers but all will have mortgages , car loans and/or other financial commitments , so they couldn't be blamed for seeking some ongoing financial security. IM may have ( as he stated) a quiet word with a few , but one suspects that he can't be very reassuring. After all, the owner and the chairman have both come out publicly talking of severe budget cuts in most likely circumstances.
I wonder what John Sim's strategy is? Does he think that most prospective buyers would be happy with an ever-weakening squad or does he doubt that a buyer will be found until we are a hybrid or half-time squad and " balanced the books" ? WIll he be in for that longer haul? |
