Quote:
The group you talk of was known as the Commercial Committee, and as you rightly say, it started off with a healthy number of people who attended meetings regularly when ideas were being talked about, but when the time came to put the ideas into action they disappeared faster than snaw aff a dyke.
The only real idea that came to fruition was a Coca Cola Cup night in the 200 Club when we showed the final in full and even had a half-time break wi' pies, bovril and stovies. The place was packed and could have sold out twice over.
The commercial committee died out when only 3 people, me, John Drysdale and A.N Other showed up for what was the final meeting in the Novar Bar.
If somebody wants to start up something similar it would be great, but these things tend to attract people who say they are interested in helping when in actual fact they're only there to find out what's going on, and when it comes to getting things done, they disappear and you're left with the same handful of people every time.
Sad but true Crying or Very sad

Nail on head James

I too was one of the Commercial Committee.I was not the A.N Othere but think I got down to the last 6 or 8 Laughing

I think its up to individual fans and groups of Rovers friends to also add to the fund raising set of teams NOT just the "usual" great band of fans fund raising i.e., Quinny and his fantastic team

For example Stephen and his cards is a great idea and already a success as he's run out of cards.

Firstly, thanks for the kind words about the cards. What I would say is that what I have done is something that any fan could do.... but it isn't as easy as you may think.

Tam mentions sales with respect to his shirts. What we have to remember is that to make good profit in terms of sales you need to buy stock at a very cheap rate - to do this you need to buy a lot. Unfortunatly we don't have the fan base to sell lots of things to!

As others have mentioned I think it is a great idea to formalise a fundraising 'function', but whether or not it can be maintained is questionable.

I do have an idea of something I wish to start in the new year. If there is anybody with graphic design skills that would like to help out give me a PM.

I think the Decembeard fundraiser that we are one week in to is a decent indicator of the apathy that can surround fund raising ventures.
There hasn't been a lot of interest whatsoever in a fundraiser that is splitting proceeds between RRFC and Victoria Hospice by simply growing a beard for a month. I understand that folk may have certain barriers like work policies etc but there is a potential to earn the club thousands with enough people taking part.

I suppose you need to try out new stuff to see what will take off. I'll still be up for doing it next year as any money going to the Rovers and the Hospice is good money.

Think some of the fans on the fund raising committee got disillusioned by some of the negativity generated by the "done that, seen that, it failed" fans, so guys left. A few got on with projects they thought could survive.

Perhaps Vinnie this current classic top hasn't been a success as much as we would have liked it to be and you suggest we have made no contributions to the club - yet. But what we have done is start with no cash, received funding paid the funder back and made some profit to put to the next classic top. Received some more funding and along with the profit put it to the third classic top. We paid the funder back and IF we sold the all the 1970s classic tops we would have self funded the fourth classic top. From this I'm sure we would have paid for the fifth classic top from the profits AND then started donating the profits from that sale.

We only purchase 40 classic tops, unfortunately we only sold 20 of the 1970s tops so far.

However, this project shows I hope that you can start a venture from scratch.

Andy C, perhaps the Decembeard came to close on the back of fund raising during the similar Movember campaign.

Perhaps its too much for fans during an already expensive Christmas period.

good luck anyway.

Possibly Tam.
What's a couple of quid sponsorship between friends and colleagues though?
Even if we got 20 folk doing an average of £50 we'd be able to hand over £500 quid each. Maybe a new HD tv for the Hospice and money towards one of our youth teams for boots, shinnies, whatever.

If it comes to the stage that we calculate what sponsorship we gain and it ends up getting the Hospice staff and the club office staff a box of teabags to last them a couple of weeks then it'll have been worth it. Laughing

I think this fundraising group would work but it needs everyone pulling in the right direction plus it could be tied into community stuff aswell.I dont see what the problem is to do this because if we want the club to survive we need funding from other resources other than through the turnstiles. How many folk have said they are going to do something and actually go and do it ? What and how do those on the fans forum raise money is it seperately or do they work together ? The three hairy faces ME,RENTON and GRUBBY from my lot have so far raised over £200 in the last week with more to come in so it can be done to help the club.

All I'm saying is that I'd rather see people raising money than forming a group to talk about raising money. Good on you guys for doing the Decembeard thing, I'd have joined you if I didn't have one already!

Talking of apathy - what exactly are the club doing to generate income other than chumping their gums in the press about cash flow?

The selling of tickets for the Pars game could easily have been enough to tide over a few weeks and was mooted on this site some time ago. Its a lost opportunity now even if they do go ahead but is one example where some pro active initiative from within the club could have had a massive benefit. I mean the recent cold snap was predicted all over the news for at least a week before hand and this really is not a shock.

There are alot of fans on here who wear their hearts on their sleeve and gentlemen my hat is off to you because I just could not be doing with the hassle of fund raising etc. I'm happy to donate / support etc but actually getting involved and doing something is not all that appealling. I'm sure many (most) fans come into this category.

The chap that did the XMAS card thing did a fantastic job - imagine how much more income could have been generated if the club had someone with this initiative internally and maybe even supported such a venture themselves whereby it could have been orders of magnitude greater.

Did securing the very first unit/shop in the Mercat in the lead up to Christmas selling RRFC merchandise not originate from the commercial group?Manned by volunteers and a great success if I remember correctly

I contacted John Drysdale a few years ago and managed to get all the unsold progammes, to sell on ebay.

Managed to raise a few hundred, I would assume there are a few years worth of programmes there again.

The first Mercat Xmas shop was planned by the Supporters' Club outwith the Commercial Committee, but it was discussed at Commercial Committee meetings and a handful of those who attended the CC meetings including Messrs Rowbotham, Stevenson and McGregor, did come along and help to man it, and a fantastic job they did to, raising over £16,000 for the club.

They way I see it is,supporters of both clubs will put off purchasing a ticket(IMO it won`t be a full house anyway)Due to poor ticket sales cash gate on the day

Agreed ... but what a lost opportunity after the game at EEP.

In the post match euphoria tickets would have been lapped up.

Not now..... as XMAS approaches higher priorities abound.
