can anyone explain why the majority of clubs have decided to abandon cash gates on match days?
as a self employed person who often picks up shifts on a Saturday it is not easy to judge if i'll make it to some games, whilst i don't mind giving the cash to Rovers if i miss a game because of work, it does hack me off having to buy in advance for away games to the point where if there is any doubt then i am no longer going, whereas before with a cash turnstile option i would more often than not go at the last minute etc.

thoughts?

- Reduced risks (theft, embezzlement, counterfeiting, change errors, cash storage, etc). Paying cash to get the ticket in a more relaxed way (i.e. in the Store) allows avoidance of the time pressure, which reduces almost those risks, and also video surveillance.

- Reduced Staffing needs (scanning/taking a ticket quicker than stating charge, taking money, making change, etc)

- Accounting (clear trail of purchase, especially for shared gate matches)

I totally agree.
That said, We were very impressed with the self scan and remote access gate at partick. Shocked Very Happy

From a clubs point of view it is a good system.
However it is not suitable for all occasions Confused
And “ may” result in some lost revenue.
These clubs are gambling that what they save in wages will leave them financially better off.
Progress? Rolling Eyes

thought it was maybe a Covid hangover issue but i guess cash is a riskier, more costly option and clubs, as said, have weighed up the risks and decided all pre-paid ticketing is the way to go.

Even last minute, when you're travelling to an away game, you can buy tickets online using a phone. Advance is still "right up to kick off" for most of the teams. The downside is that it is much slower entry in some cases. Hamilton for example had many delays in entry because the guy scanning the tickets had no signal on his phone/scanner.

The flaw is phone data coverage. Each team needs antennas at their facility, perhaps on the light standards, from all carriers. Heck, the carriers pay for those locations too…not a lot, but.

For the Hamilton game Rovers fans were urged to purchase tickets online to avoid queues which of course most people did.

Turn up at the ground at 2.40 and the queue for the single point of entry for pre purchased tickets was back through the underground car park because they had a single scanner with a dodgy signal.

Right next door was a cash gate which I saw 3 people use straight through no delay while several hundred fans queued with pre purchased tickets at a single turnstile.

Go figure.
