Feels like its a total Scottish football issue hunting for players https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/62030282

Perhaps this just highlights that the talent pool isn't there to support so many clubs at the level they want to be at. Might only get worse the further we go into Brexit etc.

Not sure I understand what Brexit has to do with anything, not as far as RRFC anyway. We should be looking for home grown/local talent (as should all Scottish clubs. I is embarrassing to read of all the transfer stuff happening in the premiership - hardly any talk of Scottish names, 95% are unpronounceable foreigners. What chance has the national side got.............?

Thats the problem, the available talent pool isn't there, clubs in England have much stricter rules on foreigners than we do, especially lower level teams who will now (see Hartlepool, Fleetwood, FGR) signing players from up here because they don't fall under the same restrictions as EU players now. I agree we should, but given that a lot of released players aren't at the level required to step into first team football here or elsewhere, we're going to have to look further afield. Developing home grown talent costs money and time.

Big A and GP, I know this will be controversial but here goes:

I think the solution lies with the authorities. Good young Scottish talent is hard to come by, and there are a lot of reasons for this. However high amongst those reasons is the dissolving of the reserve leagues. These leagues and reserve teams that played in them were great nursery platforms for youth football whilst also allowing injured first team players to get game time. The later being even better for youngsters to learn the game with the auld heeds coaching the youngsters DURING an actual game.

Aye, Money, or lack of it, will no doubt be sited as a reason not to do this. However Money ought to be found for this important task of not only ensuring the continuation of our game, but building our future National team as well. It is no use having all the best potential youths playing in the premier league's B teams. Some of these guys could be getting weekly starts for other lower division clubs and as such would be learning their trade against stiffer opposition.

Another thing the authorities can do would be to introduce an edict that every team must have say an under 20 Scottish player listed in the starting 11? Controversial, but if every team were forced to do it, far more focus would be concentrated on bringing the kids skills into line. Clearly in England this would be an English under 20, and in Wales and Ireland a Welsh or Irish under 20.

Just a thought!

Agree with much of this but imo, the problem lies with a lack of good quality coaches.
Like pretty much all education in the last 20 years or so, itís tick box here tick box there.

Plenty coaches around the Scottish leagues but the quality is not there and if the odd one makes it, they will be picked up and flown away.

Europe certainly can and do possess skilled coaches and that includes many smaller nations similar in size to us.
Our clubs are skilled in getting players to steal yardage at throw ins and free kicks and to waste time by throwing balls away and all that crap, shame there is not as much care in skills and techniques.
I would also wonder as regards eating habits.
Somehow I just do not think that young people at small clubs think long term and are ambitious to the point where they will live and eat the way highly paid professionals do.
I may well be wrong.
There is however little argument that we simply do not grow many talented kids that rise to the level of EPL or foreign clubs.

Until this issue is resolved we are always gonna be languishing on the fringes as ď small fryĒ.

My helmet is on. Sad

I blame the OF. They have stolen all the best players from other Scottish clubs over the years and they either didnít make many appearances or disappeared. The football authorities fawn over both these sides to such an extent that they are miles ahead of any other Scottish side. No one cares about the other 40 professional sides and the focus of the media, SPL, SFA etc is always about Celtic and Rangers. Scottish football has been dead for years thanks to the Glasgow giants and the shameful bigotry that encompasses their fans.

I agree with that, to an extent anyway.

Can't argue with a word of that.

The perennial, ongoing 'big Willie' contest between the Bigot brothers and the media narrative that this is some sort of positive, is the reason Scotland Is, and is likely to remain, a football backwater.
