Fascinating article in by Greg Gordon in today's Scotland on Sunday.
The theme is not unexpected but the facts are stark ( there's a pun in there .)
Last season after 33 games and a week before the title decider at Rugby Park, Arbroath had conceded only two goals after 75 minutes. In contrast, according to the article, Raith had conceded
14 after 75 minutes ,8 at home (including the infamous Hamilton game ) and 6 away.
Arbroath also scored 4 late (ie after 75 minutes ) goals at home and 8 away. (The Rovers' equivalent was not stated )
If any reminder is necessary, Arbroath were a part-time team.
The case against Raith's defence ,in particular, rests (athough the whole team comes under scrutiny in these circumstances ). |

Good article/post.
Our goals for and against were pretty equal , if memory serves. Defensively we were poor in my opinion and considering our experienced centrebacks there was something lacking.
Dunno whether it was motivation, will to win, people lacking concentration, poor organisation or what, but I think IM will sort that particular problem.
A hard working cohesive squad will, imo, get us to the playoffs.
I also predict a small lottery win. I am fairly confident on that.. .
( usually about £2.80)
Oh.......and LUCK, fair share of that is all I ask.
Plenty games over the west coast, so looking forward to seeing matches in the flesh. _________________ Born a Rover Live a Rover Die a Rover |

I'd like to know the number of goals conceded when Lang and Berra were the pairing and when not. |

It is a good point.
I have no doubt that EPL clubs would definitely have staff studying those sort of details/ stats.
Whether IM will or not I don’t know.
Possibly something he would look at during the season as it progresses should there be defensive frailties.
Indeed, it would be logical to look at all aspects of how we perform with/ without certain players.
Advice when I was young was.......look at successful teams/ individuals at your chosen sport and where possible try to emulate them.
Good habits, bad habits etc. _________________ Born a Rover Live a Rover Die a Rover |

I'll never forget a pivotal game at McDairmid Park in April or May 1995. It was a "must win" game, if we were to win the league. Well into injury time, at 1- 1 with things not looking good, Stevie Crawford broke away and got one-on-one with the keeper. He then calmy slotted home, sending the balll right between the keeper's legs. Afterwards, Paul Sturrock said: "A league-winning side is a side that plays to the final whistle!". I remember that well. Last season we did "other" . Get somone to say "Mind the gap!" on the tannoy - London Undergound stylie - from 75 minutes onwards! Joking aside, I don't think Murray would need a tannoy and he wouldn't stand for late slacking off. |

Just a quick look over the results on website.
Including all preseason and cup games excluding Davos game -
Lang - Berra conceded 5 goals and kept 3 clean sheets (Over 8 games)
Lang - Bene conceded 2 goals and kept 2 clean sheets (Over 3 games)
Bene - Berra conceded 35 goals and kept 10 clean sheets (Over 31 Games)
Would really need to sit down and work out properly as over the season we had 8 different CB pairings. |

Or do what Dundee used to do. Be winning with 10 minutes to go and withdraw the ballboys to waste time when the ball goes out of play. |

So…ignoring partners…
Lang 7 over 11, for 0.64 goals allowed per game…5 clean over 11 for 0.45 clean.
Berra 40 over 39, for 1.03 allowed…13 over 39 for 0.33 clean.
Bene 37 over 34, for 1.09 allowed…12 over 34 for 0.35 clean.
With partners..
Lang-Berra 0.63 allowed and 0.37 clean.
Lang-Bene 0.67 allowed and 0.67 clean.
Bene-Berra 1.13 allowed and 0.32 clean.
Honestly, Lang-Bene is probably too small a sample to draw conclusions, but Lang-Berra is a better one (8 vs 3 games). Simply replacing Lang with Bene increases goals allowed 79% and reduces clean sheets 14%. |
