I'd like the new captain to be Ross Matthews. He has been through the bad and good times with The Rovers and has signed until May 2024. He's also competitive with a winning mentality,
But with so many midfielders signed, is he likely to start every match or will there be rotation? eg Scott Brown plays a similar role.
Berra is another possibility but we don't know what other CBs will be signed.
Brad is said to be good in the dressingroom but he has only signed a year's extension on his contract.
Jamma but is a keeper well positioned to be captain?
Other candidates? |

I think Mathew's is a fantastic call tbh he's now one of the longest serving players and has spent years under bene not to mention having the captain in midfield to motivate the midfield and organise is another good point if not him then I'd be giving the arm band to macdonald his team organising is spot on his command of area is good and he's got lots of top level experience only disadvantage would be he'd be too far from the strikers _________________ Murray |

Matthew's would be the obvious however I hope Murray assess all candidates during the pre season and forms his own opinion on what he sees. |

i can't see RM getting in the starting eleven every week given the midfield options open to the new gaffer.
Suspect MacDonald or Berra will get the armband _________________ Gallatown boot boys |

Berra for me.
Oozes experience and organisational skills. He would seem a natural shoe in.
Given some of the chat on Raith TV last year though, I'm not sure if he has the desired respect from some of the younger players; and respect for an on-field Captain is essential. |

Spencer for me, nothing against any of the others, just reckon if he is fit, he is the next name on the team sheet after MacDonald, might even persuade him to sign a mid season extension. _________________ http://www.helpforheroes.org.uk/ |

Berra ain't gonna happen RZ.............just "signed on" as PLAYER COACH. Can't see him as captain too. _________________ Keeping the Faith (and the Missionary work!) |

Ross Matthews is the natural choice for me, at least from the players we know.
Goalkeeper not a good choice because he can't influence forwards on field on play. Berra too many other roles, and you have to spread the responsibility.
Of course, we could sign another natural leader before the season starts - in which case, Ross could be VC. All in good time.... |

Last season the team leaked goals for fun.
Berra was there at the heart of it for many of them and being older means he “ could” be viewed as over the hill.
Personally I am a believer in a midfielder purely because of their position amongst the team on the pitch, assuming of course that he has the required respect of his fellow players.
The captain should also me a first pick starter each week. ( barring injuries/suspension).
Experience is without doubt a good thing. However, there comes a point where you pass “experience “ and graduate to “ old timer” .
The squad themselves should collectively have an input as forcing the wrong person onto the team could easily backfire.
It is a tester for all managers, get it wrong and things can turn nasty creating factions in the squad.
All in all.........it is a decision that can have a good or bad influence on the team.
Murray has been round coaching/managing long enough to know all this.
My whole point is......picking a captain is not an easy descision. _________________ Born a Rover Live a Rover Die a Rover |

Just get all the players to write down a name after they have made two or three nominations from the squad and fold the paper into a ballot box and see who they wish to have as their captain.
They could also put down a second name under the title for vice captain.
Probably get more respect for the chosen player(s) that way than have someone imposed on them. _________________ Talk on! Talk on!

That process would have a lot of merit,Embow.
Judging by IM 's interview , the captain will be a player who was in last season's squad ,with Berra (not a candidate himself ) having a strong say in that choice.
Looks to me as if that will be Rossco or Brad Spencer, with the other being vice-captain.
May come down to which player is deemed to be the more certain starter, which will become clearer as the friendlies and
even League Cup game are played. IM said that different players may get the armband in the initial run of matches.
Jamma is the most certain to start games, if fit, but we don't know the views of IM or Christophe on keeper captains. |

The biggest factor in being a captain is leadership need to be able to keep the squad organised and motivated them when they're not doing so great _________________ Murray |
