Embow, my English teacher always insisted that the correct expression is "BRAN new" not "BRAND new", having originated from the time when NEW imported breakable goods were packed in bran filled barrels for safety
Just being ultra pedantic...........

Castle, same confusion raging in my head............can't find any reference to anything new relating to Mr Mendy and RRFC 
Not sure if the prospect of a return fills me with excitement or dread.

Nothing at all pedantic there Big Alex.
It's a new one for me and certainly not to be dismissed. I was always taught that bran' new was slovenly speech and to pronounce my words with clear diction!
I think I'm with you on this.👍😊

Could be ersed cos I would have felt a bit of a prat if I was spreading crap fed to me by "wee Willie Harris"
At least my memory is intact whether the it's crap or not.
According to Mr Google..........
"The term 'brand new' or 'bran new' was when new items were packaged up with unwanted bran grain in the 18th Century to protect the object during transit. When the item was unpacked, the owner would often find traces of bran in the item. Hence the term."
