Happy to trust the manager on this one.
We have plenty defensive options next year, so we shouldn't be relying on him. We also have a young side in general, his experience could be absolutely vital.
He also absolutely strolled through games with Dundee at this level last season, so lets see how it goes. May well be that he is part of a back 3, which would put less pressure on him.
Trust the manager. This isn't a jersey filling loan move, he obviously has a plan in mind here and I'm happy to go along with it. |

Can't pretend I'm not very surprised. When Steve Anderson signed ,most were very pleased, but the circumstances were different as we were down a league , leaking goals and Sando was coming from a higher level.
We aren't leaking goals any longer. On the other hand, Berra has played at the top level in England and has 41 Scotland caps , so has vast experience.
I guess that we have to wait to see what playing role JMcG and Smudger have in mind for him, in addition to bringing on our younger centre-backs. They have earned our trust.
It seems increasingly unlikely that Frankie Musonda will be with us next season , although none of the signed defenders can play across the whole defensive unit like Frankie can. |

Barring us gaining promotion I think Musonda will move upwards on to better things and Davo will move down the way, the 4 central defenders we have signed/PCA will probably be it for next season. Bearing in mind Macca can play in the centre too I expect the next defensive signings we announce will be fullbacks to give cover or competition for Tumilty and Macca. _________________ Competitive goals: Easton 5, Vaughan 5, Smith 4, Hamilton 2, Dick 1, Gullan 1, Masson 1, Mitchell 1, Mullin 1, Stanton 1, Watson 1, OG's 1, |

But I'd much rather have read the news that we've re-signed Hendry and Musonda and Vaughan
And Hibs have let the Hammer join us permanently |
Exactly this. |

I think 5 CB’s is more likely, especially if Musonda is the fifth. Frankie can play FB, as can McKay, giving us the best of all worlds from 7 back line players. If Frankie is lost, and JMcG adjudges Mendy not up to retaining, I’d expect us to look to a player with the ability to play inside or out...and if we keep Mendy, another FB would not be amiss, another reason he is probably gone.
If I was JMcG, I’d be taking a look at Liam Dick, the Alloa FB,,or a player like that. The other thought is will KMac sign a full time contract? If he declines to do so, do we want to keep him, especially if we achieved promotion? |

Kieran MacDonald is under contract until June 2022. How are you going to 'not keep him?' |

I'd rather we offered Musonda what he wants to stay here rather than sign someone like Berra. Frankie still has so much to offer and, if he can work on his pace, would be an outstanding player for us. Berra is 36 and whilst he may have great experience, his complete lack of pace and concentration at times really makes me question this decision. _________________ http://www.helpforheroes.org.uk/ |

How old was Narey when we signed him and he was one of the best signings we ever made?
Berra may not be in the class of Narey but has huge experience to pass on to the younger defenders. Could be a shrew move by McGlynn. |

We send him out, because I cannot see a part time player for the Rovers in the Premiership. I just think his part time status is already hindering him somewhat, and I suspect he will need to commit soon, one way or the other. Just my $0.02. |

It's a decent shout and very similar to what the gaffer has already done (but one the right) in signing Lang who along with McKay can play at rightback if required.
However I still believe that 4 will be the magic number (it was realistically 4 this season) for central defenders unless Mus agrees to another term. I also think the next signing will be a guy that is more comfortable at fullback than centre half.
Key to it all as you say is it'd be good to hear what Macca is planning on doing next season, if he goes full-time it'd be good to tie him down on a longer contract. If in fact he's not staying then we need a new left back and cover In the latter Liam Dick would be decent cover in that case. _________________ Competitive goals: Easton 5, Vaughan 5, Smith 4, Hamilton 2, Dick 1, Gullan 1, Masson 1, Mitchell 1, Mullin 1, Stanton 1, Watson 1, OG's 1, |

Got to laugh at some of the experts comments on page one of this thread, Christophe has made fools of them with his performances so far.
While I wasn’t as wholeheartedly opposed to his signing as some I will admit I wasn’t 100% convinced either.
Watching him week by week you can see he still has something left in those old legs of his and because of his maturity, experience the way he reads the game so well and as a result is rarely caught out and done for pace the way many of us feared.
The added benefit is what we are also seeing with the other defenders. I don’t think it’s any fluke coincidence that Bene I’d having his best season in years. McKay, Lang, Tumilty and Dick will likely also be benefiting hugely, and perhaps many others too. _________________ Competitive goals: Easton 5, Vaughan 5, Smith 4, Hamilton 2, Dick 1, Gullan 1, Masson 1, Mitchell 1, Mullin 1, Stanton 1, Watson 1, OG's 1, |

It was me who started this post and I'll happily hold my hands up and say I've been proved wrong thus far.
The comments that were made about his signing weren't exactly baseless though - he was horribly exposed in the 2019 Scottish Cup Final, the boxing Day Edinburgh derby in the season Hearts were relegated, our 3-2 win at Tynecastle last season, Hearts' Scottish Cup defeat at Brora and a televised game at Dens Park last season.
Maybe he's being coached and managed better now, or playing alongside better defenders, or maybe thriving in a team that tries to play out from the back.

Berra announces he has retired. You couldn’t make this up. Now not a single center half with the season about to start🤷🏻♂️ _________________ Davie McGurn gone but never forgotten! |

You just cannot write the script these days at this club!
It's going to be a long weary haul through this season if some key positions aren't filled quickly with some quality.
As for Christophe, I hope you enjoy your break and are successful in your next move in football
How do I get the feeling that you'll soon be announced as an addition to the Hearts coaching team? 🤔 _________________ Talk on! Talk on!
