My Gateshead FC & Sunderland AFC pal texted me this:
On this day in 1967 Sunderland bought Ian Porterfield (who became the FA Cup hero when he won it in 1973from Raith Rovers for £45,000.)
Ian Porterfield was one of my heroes back then, so elegant, skilful and full of energy. |

I mentioned somewhere else that he transferred after our 10-2 humiliation at Ibrox on 16/12/67.
Embow informed me that he was supposed to sign for Rangers just after until they discovered something about his upbringing.

Yup!
That was the way of the Ibrox fitba' world back in the day pre- Souness and Mo Johnston, despite all the false denials that emanated from Edmonston Drive from time to time over the years pre- the aforementioned Mr Souness.
