Need some help from some oldies like me
I was a kid in KDY in the 50s/60s and my Gran had a flat on the High Street. My own grandkids have been asking about my life in KDY back then and I was trying to tell them about visiting MY grandparents. I tried to show them the flat in the High Street, but clearly things have changed in 60 years!!!!!!!
Can anyone confirm that the Nickel and Dime hardware shop was a picture house (Gaumont?) back then? My gran's flat entrance was immediately to the left (Red sandstone, gated). It looks correct but it was long ago and a bit hazy. _________________ Keeping the Faith (and the Missionary work!) |

Nope Alex, Nicle and Dime is further east between the ABC Cinema and the old Woolworths, it sits on the site of the SSEB showroom and before that what was Coopers fine fare.
The Gaumont (old Odeon) burned down around 1974-76 and is opposite where McDonalds was in the new builds where the early learning centre and Greener Kirkcaldy was, if you look at photos of the street you see the 3 newer stone fronted shops of which the post office is the last before Rymans Stationary(?) that was the site. _________________ Competitive goals: Connolly 15, Easton 6, Gullan 6, Stanton 4, Dick 3, Vaughan 3, Connell 2, Brown 1, Frederiksen 1, McBride 1, OG 1. |

Thanks Scotty.
Just had a look on Google Maps / Street View and what was my Gran's flat is above Greener Kirkcaldy and Apollo Blinds, to the left (East) of Nickel and Dimes.
Just shows how hazy things get in old age................I was sure Nickel and Dimes was on the site of a picture house (whether the Gaumont or ABC - can remember there was the two but which was close by is the hazy bit.)
Thanks again _________________ Keeping the Faith (and the Missionary work!) |

Just to clarify the Greener Kirkcaldy shop I mentioned is not the same one as above, although the same company this shop was for a while in a different location along on the other side of Kirk Wynd actually on the site of the old Odeon.
The red sandstone block runs from Redburn Wynd to Nickel & Dime and houses the Kings theatre (formerly the ABC Cinema) along with several small shops including Apollo blinds, a Polish deli, Tattoo parlour and a sweetie shop.
I'm guessing your grans flat was above one of those shops and the back looked out over the back of the ABC cinema and the Forth to the south, and out the other window on to Beveridges shop on the opposite side of the high st. _________________ Competitive goals: Connolly 15, Easton 6, Gullan 6, Stanton 4, Dick 3, Vaughan 3, Connell 2, Brown 1, Frederiksen 1, McBride 1, OG 1. |

A useless piece of information about the red sandstone block that housed both your Gran's flat and the ABC cinema - the architect was William Williamson whose offices were at 220 High Street, which was where Adam Smith had lived many moons before.
Williamson was also the architect for the Feuars Arms pub in Pathhead, the Police Station at St Brycedale Avenue and the building that is now Society. All were built in the early 1900s.
Told you it was useless. |
