Just to make a small correction to today's item. George McLay wasn't called up to the war. George McLay along with six others volunteered two days after Sir George McCrea formed his 'Pals' Battalion known as the 16th Royal Scots City of Edinburgh. Better known as McCrea's Battalion or the Footballers Battalion on account of the number of professional football players in it. This is a bit of a misnomer as there were many other sports represented throughout the battalion. The professional players along with many others served in C Company.
George McLay was killed by machine gun fire in October 1917 not far from Ypres. He was awarded the Military Medal the highest award for bravery for the non- commission ranks outwith the VC.
His body was never recovered and he is commemorated on a panel in Tyne Cot Military Cemetery.

Now that could be construed to have a variety of meanings! Laughing

I don't recall any mention of the Festival of Britain taking place in 2018

Iain Munro is installed as the new Raith Rovers manager replacing the long-serving Tommy McLean.

It's a disgrace that he never got a testimonial.

A testimonial? Maybe not but old hamster face always recieved a warm reception from the South stand every time he returned, what more could he ask for?

My Dad knew Willie P from the pit at Dysart and said he sometimes enjoyed a dram but that's taking it to a new level.

On this day 1949
"Following promotion the previous season Rovers took on Celtic at Parkhead drawing the match 2-2 in front of a crowd of 32000. Rovers fielded two ex-Celts in Joe McLaughlin and Andy Young. Rovers twice came from behind in the game with Willie Penman netting on each occasion. The game is most notable for an injury to Willie Penman. Rovers trainer Willie Hunter raced onto the park to administer smelling salts but the semi-conscious Penman took a deep drink of the salts. Penman was taken away to the dressing room where he was violently sick but insisted on returning to the action!"

1923
"The prolific Tom Jennings scores four times in Rovers 6-1 win in a league game against Third Lanark. James and Archibald being the other scorers."

Many teams wax lyrical about their famous 5. Hibs have their Ormond, Turnbull, Smith, Johnstone and Reilly, East Fife go on about Philp, Findlay, Aitken, Laird and Stewart.

But Rovers had a famous 5 before that though with Miller, Bell, Jennings, James and Archibald. In the days when £1000 was a big money for a player (Alex James later moved to Arsenal from Preston for £8.7k in 1929, and that was reckoned to be a steal!) The speculation was that Millwall were according to the daily papers of the time (and the Kirkcaldy Times) ready to offer Rovers £100,000 for all 5.
Of course it never came to pass as the 5 players were sold off piecemeal (and for peanuts) but if it had, it would almost certainly have changed our fortunes dramatically. The value of £100,000 in 1923 in todays money would be OVER £6,000,000

Alas the Millwall story was but an urban myth.
It was supposedly £50K in total but as you rightly point out it never came to pass because it was never there in the first instance.
Here we are, all but a hundred years on, and press speculation, implications, half truths and no truths are still part of the daily diet in sport and other aspects of life.
