Looking to clarify a memory from about 1973-1975. I remember a snooker hall, first floor, off the High Street. Rummaging around on Google Street View, the doorway to the side of Charles Clinkard store, with the Charlotte Dental Practice sign, looks a lot like little me remembers. Anyone remember such a thing?

Think you're too far along the High St Tx Rover,memory says it was the Street before(nearer Links St).The Institute is the name if memory serves me correctly.

It was indeed further along towards the Links but only about 80 yards. The Peoples Institute was located above what is now Blind Davy's with the entrance off Glasswork Street. Spent many a saturday there but never quite reached the standard of being a regular in the "big" hall at the back and consigned to the front room where there was only 2 tables normally kept for the less competent players !! Used to be in awe of the older players through the back on the Championship tables

There was a snooker hall maybe still there in Glasswork Street just across from Lows and close to old site of Wrights Lemonade and an excellent wee chippie called Wilsons. Spent a few ticky days at the hall and my grandparents owned Wright’s Lemonade - gold medal Ginger Beer - the memory of the bubbles on my tongue is still the standard that few ginger beers can yet attain!!

Bingo, “Peoples Club and Institute, Established 1865”. I thought the street looked too wide, but I put that down to being eight or so. I was also in the front room only!

So, since I’m asking, the John Menzies was where the WHSmith is, almost across from the walk up from Tollbooth? And was Jackie O’s down on the Esplanade at Charlotte (I never got to Kirkcaldy during it’s fame, and my time for those clubs)?

This is what became of Jackie Os, built by Alex Penman no less. To the right of it you can just pick out the ugliest car park in the world.

For us auld yins the Building was more famous for being the Troc Cafe and the Burma Ballroom - never been to Jackie Qs or is it Os?

And the wee papershop that was there as well,used to get a superman comic for the bus journey from the country bus terminance up to my Gran and grandads in Crosshill. Smile

Drove buses from there for a year or so for Alexander’s - classic comeback - punter says to inspector “you can stick your bus up yer erse” - response “sorry already got a few up there and some are sideways”. Was the papershop Mascocias Zico?

Opposite the Troc was the “volunteers green” a political meeting point in the past. Does anyone remember the fantastic Wrights Lemonade factory just on the north side of the VG? Demolished to build a car park that never happened.

Can't help you with the name Willie,also remember the knickerbocker glory ice cream sundae in the Troc it was brilliant. Laughing
