Marks and Spencers is closing its Kirkcaldy High Street branch.

That's a massive blow to the high street. Every other business is going to be affected by this and will lead to many of them closing for good.

It's where you used to be able to park your car and pop into a shop for something before H&S deemed that unsafe for pedestrians and town planners allowed massive shopping areas to be built on the outskirts of a place sucking the life out of the very heart of it. Not to mention the greedy landlords who put rents up such they were nigh on unaffordable not to mention ludicrous business rates.

Where you have to pay to park (unlike Glenrothes). The M&S food outlet at the retail park will be next, as it's nearly been completely empty anytime I've been in it.

While we're on the subject of the town in decline, what ever happened to the Premier Inn hotel which was given full planning permission and was meant to have opened about a year and a half ago?

Probably the same as happened to the massive Cala development in South West Kirkcaldy and the various Mercat expansions that were proposed over the years.

Aware you have to pay, just highlightng the fact there is ample parking.Glenrothes is free for I think 2 hrs and was under the impression this had or was in place in kirkcaldy

I,d expect next to close will be B&M at the other end if the high street having now opened up another store at the retail park

Use it or lose it. Folk moan about places closing but do all their shopping online as it’s cheaper. You can’t have it both ways.

People need money to spend in shops. Do you know what the job situation is like in Kirkcaldy? I've had 1 job in KDY (for 12 weeks this year) since being made redundant at the end of 2009. I've since only found work in Dunfermline, but mainly in Edinburgh. Kirkcaldy is a dead zone for proper jobs.

You are allowed to travel btw.

I’ve never been lucky enough to have a job in Kirkcaldy.

Oh do leave it out. I have been spending up to 5 hours a day (4.5 on average) every day traveling to/from work while I've worked in Edinburgh over the last 4 years. Don't talk to me about having to travel.

I don't quite get the hostility towards the retail park. Folk rave on about the importance of the High Street, which is basically a load of shops in a row, but moan about the retail park, which is basically a load of shops in a row.

What difference does it make where people are spending their money as long as it's somewhere in Kirkcaldy?

You are aware that M+S is opening a new branch in Glenrothes shortly? Crazy if you ask me, if their Kdy one is closing and their one up at retail park is always empty then no point opening one here which which be less busy and plunked right beside Asda, Morrison’s, Lidl and Aldi
