If anyone is looking for something to do on Saturday night Flyers are in cup action against the Belfast Giants, It’s the first leg of the quarter final of the challenge cup.
It’s also the annual toys drive
Each year, toys are donated by Flyers fans and collected in by the Flyers players on behalf of the Family and Community Support Team (FACST) who work in conjunction with various charities throughout Fife, who assist vulnerable and disadvantaged families in the local area. The toys/gifts are distributed to these families in time for Christmas.
The Flyers players will remain on the ice at the end of the game (following man of the match and on ice presentations) to collect the toy/gift donations from the fans around the boards.
Alternatively, fans can hand toys / gifts in to the rink office or to the Flyers office on any match night prior to and including Saturday 16th December 2017.
So it’s a big night on and off the ice as well as a fun and exciting night. the games are fast and physical usually with plenty of goals and fun entertainment between the periods like go kart racing, chuck-a-puck or fling-a-frisbee there’s more familiar things like a 50/50 draw and raffles.
So if anyone hasn’t been before come along and give it a try. Good food available from the bar and cafe, have a few beers you can even take your drink to your seats.
So come along bring a toy and most of all BRING THE NOISE

I used to quite enjoy the Flyers in the past, but you couldn't pay me to go now.
It's like a pantomime with an ice hockey match somewhere in the middle of it.
The guy who's the announcer / DJ boils my Colin Nish.
There's no way I could suffer that on a Saturday night.

That’s unfortunate, it’s a shame you don’t go anymore but it’s a personal choice obviously. Hopefully some things can change to encourage some lapsed fans back to the auld barn.
As I still enjoy going especially to watch this team we’ve put together this year I hope we can pull a few more fans in. These players deserve more support which unfortunately in the current financial climate is a struggle. |

Sorry Bill I couldn't agree less. I loved the Plum, Stoyanovich & Brown years when I was at school but I doubt you could pay me to attend now.
I stopped going years ago for various reasons.
Lets face it the only reason that flyers are currently doing well is because of multiple import players they have, and they're only here and the rink is still open (unlike Dunfermline, Perth and Falkirk) is because the whole thing is propped up by the Muir family. You mention current financial climate, this is nothing new without the aforementioned benefactors the Barn would have shut years ago and KIHC and FF gone the way of the Vikings, Panthers and Lions of yester year.
I dare say any of the provincial Scottish sides could have a decent team too if there was a wealthy patron willing to shell out wages and accommodation for better players from elsewhere but that only seems to happen in English football these days.
I cannot deny that there's a wee green eyed monster on the go and it's true to an extent that I'm jealous that Flyers currently doing better than the Rovers. On a less personal level though I deeply dislike the way Hockey (nationwide) has gone about things at the expense of developing local talent, it's almost like watching the Scottish football back in the 1980's and 90's. It's the fact that some guy that was at best average over the pond or just cant cut it there anymore can come over and be a superstar here and local youngsters are sidelined. Used to be good back in the day when 3 imports was the norm and you had had local lads making the grade like Robbo, Deano and the Haigs or if we are talking real vintage the Latto bro's.
How disheartening for all the young guys who have done so well for all the younger age groups (Flames, Chiefs etc) but knowing they're most likely destined not to get a sniff at senior level.
The old Art Deco rink and the title of being the Oldest team are great bits of nostalgia but I'm afraid that's all they are to me.

I'd still rather see the Flyers win than lose and the toy collection and other fundraising they do deserves to be supported.
However, it's the 'Match night experience' as it was referred to in last week's FFP that keeps me away.
Being expected to stand for a so called national anthem for a domestic league game is bad enough, but being subjected to grown men banging a drum then Hi-5ing each other with big sponge hands in a synchronised goal celebration is simply toe curling.

I can’t disagree with you on the import levels in British elite level hockey but if you remember at the point of flyers joining it was elite league or stay in the snl with amateur hockey and watch the crowds continue to fall below the few hundred they had then. At that point the team and rink really would have been at risk.
But I like you did prefer the old Heineken and BNL days it’s just that the club obviously has to fight in the league it’s in and that I’m afraid is an overly import heavy league but this season it certainly has been entertaining. On a side note with you mentioning the plumb line did you see them back 4 years ago for the 75th anniversary game? It’s was really good the see Broony stoy and Ron hit the ice even if it was for one night only.

Although the match night experience off the ice leaves a lot to be desired at times but the kids that go seem to love it and they are the fans of the future so the club probably want to keep them coming. I personally don’t bother about the off ice stuff I just want to see fast skilful exciting hockey and goals a plenty. But if you don’t like it I can understand it and hope in the future it can change to help old school fans feel like it’s worth returning. Plus if it’s bothering you go to the bar it’s pretty cheap I’d maybe even stretch to buying you a pint just for coming lol |
