If you arent gonna speak any sense dont speak at all and how do you know its the same line up every year if you dont go.You are also showing your ignorance if you say you havent heard of andy chung, joes band or state of emergency to name but 3. _________________ YOULL NEVER WALK ALONE

Funny thing is after I read SOW post I just knew it was Author Itarian with a provocative comment - although I don't know the bands it's because I am off the radar doesn't mean they are not good. And - good on you SOW legendary fund raiser and heart in right place unlike some! _________________ Here Wee go again |

It’s very difficult and challenging to get people to pay and watch local/unsigned musicians, regardless of the good cause behind, so well done indeed to those organising this event. I’ve seen many of these fall down the wayside before the actual day.
In Aberdeen, a city with about 250k people you are lucky to get into 3 figures for a local music night in a central venue, with passing trade and free entry on a Fri/Sat night. Add a door charge and its really difficult unless the acts have a decent local following already.
Don’t know what its like in Fife, but up here the money/crowds very much lie in the tribute band scene just now – that’s what people want to come out and see.
Even a small local gig takes a pretty significant amount of planning etc so I certainly wouldn’t be firing any complaints at the organisers of this at all.
I’d also say its pretty crass to dismiss all local acts as “mediocre at best”. There are some incredibly talented folk out there who are unheard of and vice versa. Local music isn’t everyones cup of tea and that’s perfectly understandable, but I wouldn’t be dismissing the quality on show without any knowledge of who they are at all. |

I wish folk on here would work as hard at fundraisers, in aid of local charities and the club,as the do criticise.
People work extremely hard to support the local community and the club. One of those charities is personally close to my heart, as a family member was effected by this illness.
A minority of fans go well past the extra mile year on year to fundraise. Taking up a lot of there personal time with limited funds or support from anyone else. To stand back and criticise there efforts is nothing short of obnoxious.
Support for the event has perhaps dwindled, however it has still raised of £50,000 throughout its life span. How many fans can say they have raised £500 for the club, never mind £50,000.
I have posted less and less on this chat site, due to the continued negativity from the usual suspects, perhaps the moderators should tighten there belts a bit and implement short term bans. Some of the comments on this thread are bewildering _________________ Only on fan talk can supporters find a negative in a 5-0 win. 🤔 |

The gig has raised about £60,000 over the years with about £10,000 of that going towards reclaim the rovers fund in 2005.There is a long list of charities and good causes on the rock the rovers website which shows how many people we have helped. These include kids charities in turin and rio in brazil who were donated raith rovers football kit from money raised at a gig full of mediocre bands and solo acts.Dennis Alexander and Ally Gourlay who are sadly no longer with us were also involved over the years and they gave up their free time to be there.I know times have changed and i know money is tight and i also know that the crowds have fallen away but those who do come along make it worthwhile. To be criticised for doing this gig etc hurts and whether certain posters on here mean to or not doesnt matter.I also know that a lot of these mediocre bands have managed get many more gigs, events etc from playing at rock the rovers so it cant be that bad.If we can give £250 each to a cancer charity, kids rugby team and kirkcaldy foodbank this year that is great plus bags of food for the foodbank.Anyway i am going to speak to mike at styx to decide the way forward and then will decide about another one after that. _________________ YOULL NEVER WALK ALONE

I get the feeling that some posters are suggesting the same effort could generate more money if the concept was to be reevaluated. Maybe more people would be interested if it was once every couple of years. Maybe something else could be done in the opposite years that appeals to a different audience. It does seem a comparatively low outcome for such a lot of effort.
Thats not to criticise you in any way. I am sure the charities, the people they represent and the football club are all grateful for every penny you raise, just a suggestion, that by constantly evaluating the event and looking to change with current trends etc, it may be that you can be even more successful.
Please do not take this as an attack on you or Rock the Rovers. This is meant to be a constructive view from an outsider looking in. |

In many respects i agree with what you say and what some others say but until someone comes back to me with other ideas or offers to help then what can i do.I suppose i could always cancel next years gig but whether it came back would be up for discussion.I have the stand up show in march so that would be an option for alternate years but not had a lot of feedback about it yet. _________________ YOULL NEVER WALK ALONE

Well done to all involved.. £60k for charity over that period is amazing Gav..well done. Raising £10k directly for the Rovers is also great, every additional pound of income is better than nothing.
Its easy to suggest new ideas to raise funds..or suggest ways to improve existing ideas..difficult part is actually getting off your butt and carrying them out. Outwith the various fans groups i dont see much in terms of additional fund raising outwith the regular things like season tickets, merchandise, lotto, 50/50, player sponsorship, etc by anyone else...not criticising, as simply going to a game or buying a shirt or sponsoring a player benefits the club. Everyone is playing their part in someway...just some are doing a bit more than others, i dont think we shojld be criticising anyone who puts money into the club in any shape or form.
To everyone involved...Keep up the good work though i am sure the various charities are appreciative at least. |

Maybe you didn't hit the minimum donation criteria for getting publicity? |
