Just finished viewing oor man's latest progress update on Facebook and the situation is now getting to be a real struggle by the reading of things but my God what a spirit Ally!
I just hope you're ambition to be down to Starks for the next home game is fulfilled without too much difficulty. Just keep hingin' in there, frien'.
A total inspiration!
And to think we're all moaning about one win in ten.

Vinnie and other non Facebookers here is Ally's update.
Dear friends,
Hi Everyone
Well, I’ve made it. I’m not exactly sure how but its the 24th January and I’m still around to tell the tale. That signals 21 months now since the terminal diagnosis.
Yes, I know yesterday was 23rd but I thought I’d try to get through the whole day before committing pen and paper.
As you’ll know, I spent 11 days in hospital after having a stent fitted which should help fluids and food go down as it had got to the point where nothing was going down at all.
Since leaving hospital things have been rather mixed to say the least. Food and fluids are going down now, albeit the last couple of days have been a bit more difficult, but that could be down to one of the medications I’ve been taking. The constant vomiting of saliva had returned, and I was given a patch from the doctor to slow that down, but the flip side of that coin is that I can’t get anything down me at all for the first couple of hours in the morning.
The throat is still going into spasm often and an added feature of that it that it sends a sharp shooting pain up the right side of my face, across the eyes and down the jaw. It only lasts a few seconds but boy id it a doozy!!
For some reason my legs and feet have swollen to an unreasonable degree that I can’t get shoes on, and am walking like a 90 year old. That’s been since day one when I got home, and despite medical advice etc, it’s not allieviaitng. If there is no significant progress there by tomorrow I’ll have to get back in touch with the specialists to find a way to reduce it.
Strength wise I still feel a bit weak. I had nipped over to see the Rovers’ lads on Tuesday at training, although I was only there half an hour, it wiped me out for the rest of the day. Added to that the vomiting spasms that were coming on, it was beginning to look like I can’t travel anywhere just now. Eating out will be a thing of the past for now as my throat makes all sorts of horrible noise when trying to get food down.
And that also means I’ve had to miss out on the Raith games since before New Year, due to a variety of those factors – yesterday being inability to walk and constant vomiting. I’ll target next week’s game but it’s all about making a call on the day.
In between all this you’ll have seen me posting more of my Musical Memories series. I hope it doesn’t annoy everyone but it really is therapeutic for me. Each song takes me back to a point, and releases all sorts of happy endorphins which in turn keeps my sprits raised. After all, it’s still very important to maintain a positive attitude, and the music helps me do just that. It’s also a kind of living testament to my life. Hopefully in years to come, my grandchildren can have a look at the FB page and see just what a toss…I mean a guy their Grandad was. When people our age look at old photographs we see the images, but there aren’t many words to go with them. Who were they? What were they like?
Facebook accords us a great opportunity that, in years to come, people can look back and find out so much more, what our lives were like, where we went, the people in our lives, oh…and what some of us have for dinner (I still can’t get my head round that one).
Anyway, I won’t ramble on now as there have been plenty things said about this month’s part of the journey already without making you read through it all again.
What is important is that I recognise there will be more and more complications arising as the journey nears its conclusion, and to try to face each one head on. The illness will take me. It will take my life. But it won’t take my love, it won’t take my spirit. These are mine and non-negotiable Mr Reaper.
And for all of you reading this, nothing can take your love either, nor your spirit, nor your dignity. And as for love? You can have more, and the only way you can have more is to give yours to someone. Despite what is happening to me, life is truly wonderful. It’s a pleasure sharing all this crazy gift of time with so many people. Blessed I surely am.
Till next time.
Talk of the times, the love and the laughing.
Love

Human spirit eh? No sign of self-pity, just battling through a horrible illness, remaining positive while his life nears its conclusion.
Ally, I've never met you personally, however have known about your illness via Fantalk, etc; the fact you remain so positive, is surreal and surely a testament to your character. _________________ A proud member of the 45. Saor Alba. |
