Jimmy Gourlay was my great grandfather, who as well as playing for the Rovers went on to be a director and chairman of the club in the 1960s as well as Provst of Kirkcaldy. I think he green lighted signing Jim Baxter. |

I would also like to add that the Gourlay family were firm friends with my family. edinburghrover and his folks know who I am.
Jimmy Gourlay was chairman from the late 1940's to the early/mid 60's if my memory is still in working order.
One wee thing to point out to the original poster.. Jimmy was not one of those who signed up to McCraes. I think he served with the Royal Artillery, but not 100% sure on that. He is still very very well worthy of his tile nonetheless. A great gesture for all getting tiles. _________________ Talk on! Talk on!

I may be wrong but I think you may have the wrong Jimmy Gourlay.
There was the future chairman and Provost of the Lang Toun and there was the other Jimmy Gourlay who played in the cup final team of 1913, who I think you have maybe referred to in your research. _________________ Talk on! Talk on!

According to 'Always Next Season', there was a James C Gourlay (inside forward) who joined in 1905 and left to join Kirkcaldy United in 1913, making 301 appearances and scoring 111 goals. There was also a James William Main Gourlay (outside right) who joined in August 1914 from Leith Athletic and left in April 1919. He made 8 appearances and scored 1 goal. _________________ Dougie Hill

James William Main Gourlay was the one who went on to be the chairman and Provost of Kirkcaldy. Again I say he did volunteer for action in the war but did not join McCraes as far as I know. I'm sure it was something like the Royal Field Artillery or maybe as his great grandson suggests the Black Watch. I originally thought it was the Fife and Forfar Yeomanry but seem to recall Jack Alexander tell me it was the RFA from the uniform he is pictured wearing in the photo along with some of the McCraes lads which was in the Hearts programme last week if any of you bought one! Thinking of no one in particular! _________________ Talk on! Talk on!

On re-reading your original list you have missed out Jock Rattray from the original seven. As far as I'm aware neither Jimmy Gourlay were ever in McCraes. Hope that helps for accuracy for your splendid tile gesture. Again congrats and thanks from McCraes Battalion Trust for your efforts, wreath at Haymarket and donations Quinny. Very much appreciated. _________________ Talk on! Talk on!
