Bertie Auld, who played in the Celtic side that lifted the European Cup in 1967, has died at the age of 83.

Sad news RIP Bertie Auld.

As Cuparman says he was part of a great team. I remember seeing them a number of times and they were awesome.
Fantastic skilful players and probably the best manager.
Probably the greatest club side ever in Scotland and at the time in the UK.

Before my time as a player, but I'm just about old enough to remember his cigar drooping from his mouth after we beat his Hibs team at a packed San Starko in 1981.

Given the recent deaths of Jim Kerray and Bertie Auld, here's one for the "aulder" yins among us.
The really scary thing is I can well recall all these guys playing, especially the Rovers' lads.
Our White was of course the brother of the late great John White of Spurs and Scotland fame before being killed by a lightning strike in 1964.
Tommy Mackle ended up at Stark's Park in the season of 1965-66.
The Celtic reserves in the article could nearly have won the European Cup despite Bertie being in the doghouse of disgrace.😊

Aye, Sad right enough that Bertie has gone he was a very good player in his day.

I always had a bit of sympathy for Haffey. He was a very young keeper playing against England and you've got to remember guys, the opposition had to get past ten other players before they got to Haffey!!

Not as I completely remember things regarding the goals being scored, in particular the last ten minutes.☹️🥺. I do recall the fight back to be 3-2 down and thinking we were in this game. Alas not to be!
I accept your point Heilan Rover but the ten players in front of Haffey weren't exactly rookies in terms of international quality. Just a total collapse for some unknown reason, or one I've long since forgotten, in these last ten minutes.

You make a good point about the collapse at the end Embow, and as you say, we had a team of well known and some may say skilful professionals that day. I just feel some mitigating sympathy might be afforded a young 22 year old Goal Keeper whose confidence had clearly deserted him after the 75th minute. As others have said, the embarrassment never left the lad after that game. Most young players have the older professionals to help them through the game, however a young keeper is pretty much on his own.

It is oh so easy to simply blame the keeper after a thumping. I feel the lad was too young to be put in goal that day. Oh I know John Thomson was also a very young keeper, but he was something so much more special.

Back then Celtic were a fairly run of the mill outfit and I'm not too sure why Haffey was selected. Was he second or third choice? Wasn't Bill Brown from Spurs the first choice at that time?
Anyway it's all a long time ago now but I concur regarding sympathising with Frank Haffey and what he endured that day. If I recall correctly he did let one through the legs a là Ray Clemence and flapped another through his hands.
