I'm shocked at the demise of this once great competition.
Tonight's final between Cumnock and Rutherglen Glencairn with only just over 4,000 in attendance at Broadwood is a far cry from the tens of thousands that would turn up at Hampden for whichever teams were in the final.
I remember as a wee laddie watching St Andrews return victorious to the town in an open top bus after winning 3-1 in 1960
I was at all the Newburgh Juniors games up to and including the semi at Firhill in 1962 which alas they lost. Glenrothes 1967 anyone? Tayport in the 1990's?
The crowds were dropping off by this time but still over the ten thousand mark and Hampden was beginning to fall out of favour.
2023 final covered on Alba when it was always a staple of STV.
Changed days indeed.
A'm gettin' auld!😂 _________________ Talk on! Talk on!

Quite a few Junior sides have jumped ship to join the pyramid, this probably dilutes the quality of the competition. _________________ Hope he's got plenty Rovers action to comment on tonight.... |
