Thinking about getting a laptop for Crimbo primarily to use for my music/mp3 player to keep the main PC free of a shedload of tunes. Seems it's making the PC a wee bitty slow especially when doing virus scans.

My question is:

Is there a way to copy my Windows Media Player from the PC to my new laptop. I have about 8000+ songs on it and really don't want to go through the pallava of re-uploading all my CD's. Someone did mention that using an ethernet cable would do the trick?

Can anyone confirm if this would work as I'm not very computer savvy?

Would it not be a better idea just to get an external hard drive and copy all your tunes onto that?

£60 or so for a 1TB drive, then if you do get a new PC in the future your tunes will still be in th same place and you wont need to copy them to anywhere else. Same if your PC dies unexpectedly for whatever reason.

That was considered but my auld man is far to hooked on Raith FanTalk and I'm very much constantly wanting to do something with my tunes and mp3 player that it would be handy if I could just use it when I wish. I'd probably end up using it for other things like the internet as well in the future.

The bonus if the PC or laptop does die is there is a programme where you can connect your i-pod and copy all your files back to the PC without the need of backing it up. Very handy.
