Rumoured EM requires an op so supose it makes sense trying to bring in Ashcroft although IM could give Corr an opportunity. If not a dont get the reasoning behind having him here.
Having said that, where we are in the league and stage we,re at probably not wanting to throw in an inexperienced player into the mix _________________ THERES FIVE OF ME |

That would make sense. On loan to get games so I'm sure we would of told him that he's not sitting on the bench. |

Welcome Lee Ashcroft - never meant what I called you in the past.
Centre halfs (what is the plural of that - halves) are like goalies - they mature with age - as does everything I suppose.
Welcome signing as Euan was looking a little slower recently. Also, wonder about Corr and Masson - must be discouraged. _________________ Here Wee go again |

I remember being linked with him (Lee Ashcroft) at the start of the season and thinking surely we can get someone better (I recall I also said as much just before Christmas) but given the amount of games we've been bullied in those areas by the opening of the January window I had genuinely warmed to the idea of LA joining us.
Fast forward a month and a half and I'm now actually excited about the prospect!
Welcome aboard Lee, may you win every ball in the air in both boxes and be the solid rock opposition attacks perish on. _________________ Competitive goals: Vaughan 16, Easton 11, Hamilton 9, Smith 7, Stanton 7, Mullin 4, Connolly 3, O'Reilly 3, Rudden 3, S Brown 1, Dick 1, Gullan 1, Masson 1, Millen 1, Mitchell 1, Murray, Watson 1, OG's 1, |

Dundee really don't want their neeburs winning this league do they
Much as I think Ashcroft will be a really good and much needed addition to the squad, I do wonder where all these loanees leave us long term? Will we ever see the lad Corr in a Rovers shirt again for instance, and when you look at the squad, there are not that many born post 2000.
I really hope it's not going to be a boom or bust season for us because, for a club of our size with an average gate of around 3000, we surely cannot afford to keep signing average but experienced journeymen without ploughing money into youth development with a view to future sustainability.
A defeat on Saturday coupled to the Arabs beating Queens will leave us worse off than we were last week but with a potentially higher wage bill. I don't see that as a good thing and, whilst signing guys like Ashcroft may help us in the playoffs, I struggle to see how it will benefit us in years to come.
Personally, I would like to have seen more young lads in the squad, getting regular game time, with a view to a sustainable future for the club, I'm not seeing that right now. I really don't care if we get promoted this year or not, or next year, but the boards initial assertion that it was a long term plan seems to have gone out of the window and it's all or nothing this season. That concerns me going forward. I would have liked us to get in some young talent, develop them, keep them together for a few years with a view to pushing for promotion in 3 or 4 years time.
The old adage has it that you have to speculate to accumulate, but behind that speculation has to be some long term plan for future stability and growth, so far Barrowman has not really been clear on that and many are jumping on the Rovers Rollercoaster that has been created. Let's hope it doesn't come off the rails! _________________ http://www.helpforheroes.org.uk/ |

It would be ideal to build up our own team from youth development, in the longer term. However, I suspect we may not get a better opportunity, for a few years, to win promotion than we have right now. We are ahead of schedule, in that respect, and maybe the directors and management have decided to go for it given our current points tally, and an experienced defence will be vital. We might still not win the league, but I do fancy us for at least second place and a right good chance of winning the play-offs, with the squad we have in place now. I see Ashcroft as being an important player over the coming months, and possibly beyond that too. |

I generally agree with RZ sentiment.
The club though cannot sign players for the long term as we know not what league we are going to be in next season.
Therefore trying to bring in “ premier league players” that we cannot afford UNLESS we are promoted leaves us with only enough money to sign players for the short term until such time as we know where we are gonna be next season.
The club has to cut its cloth in line with our present predicament, which simply is......we dunno
I cannae be bothered looking through all the dates of expiry of contracts but I would assume we cannot spend money on SPL standard players unless we know the signings are affordable.
If we fail to go up then I would imagine that there would be few changes to the current squad, but, should we get promoted, then we are likely to need a few players with SPL experience.
It is a CATCH 22 for the club as there will be no answers until seasons end.
We have a good bunch of players, but should we go up, then some players will likely come in whilst others will be released.
The players we have , have the motivation to fight what presumably would be a descent pay rise whilst the club will need to grow its income.
Whilst we have a good squad atm, they are up against championship players, moving up a league is gonna cost the club.
The money HAS to be spent wisely whichever way this all plays out.
The new board has done well this far.
Were it not for the new management at the club since the start of the season, it is highly unlikely we would be in the really good position we are in . _________________ Born a Rover Live a Rover Die a Rover |

There was bit of chat regarding the fact the club were looking at future transfer windows (one or two in advance of this one) so perhaps the board still have their eyes on the ball there.
Personally I'd hope we already have a few irons in the fire for this summer. We need some signings of the age and quality of Hamilton. Corr was the right idea but it hasn't worked, we'd do better with Masson imo.
Balance is ever the key. A few seasons back if you took Davo and Jamie McDonald out the team we had a ridiculously low average age. _________________ Competitive goals: Vaughan 16, Easton 11, Hamilton 9, Smith 7, Stanton 7, Mullin 4, Connolly 3, O'Reilly 3, Rudden 3, S Brown 1, Dick 1, Gullan 1, Masson 1, Millen 1, Mitchell 1, Murray, Watson 1, OG's 1, |
