Thomson had no chance with the goal.
We were done down our left hand side, their guy cut in and curled a beauty into the net.
MacDonald wouldn't have sniffed it either.

Pre season means absolutely nothing other than getting fitness up.

Look at Ray Mckinnons season - awful pre season, results wise.

The real stuff starts in a month and thats when it matters - and that's when I will defer my judgement to.

I listened to the match commentary for the first half, and it sounded like we had a lot of possession and went in at half time one up. I cannot comment on the second half as I was not able to listen.

Hey. These games are basically try outs. We really cannot make serious comment about games where the Management team are just trying to work things out, and give potential first team players a chance. Our fans are simply being allowed to watch a training game, albeit against an opposition, whose management team are doing exactly the same as ours!

In my experience, sometimes we do well in these friendly games and then do Hee Haw in the important games that follow. In other seasons, the opposite is the case.

Best leave the serious comments to the serious games.

100% correct.
I remember walking out of Bayview that pre-season with a sense of dread, having just watched us being hosed by East Fife (Kevin Smith tore David Bates a new one).

Some of the pant wetting on here after Wednesday and today is incredible.

The trend so far in preseason seems to be…decent delivery into the goalmouth, no finishing…decent longer shoots, mainly off target…flustered defending, no pressure on some shooters.

The midfield and wings look decent, the CB issue needs fixed, we need a finisher (although, Gullan is showing signs of picking up some scraps, finallyJ and we need shots ON goal, not over/around goal.

Friendlies in the most part are glorified training exercises.

Talking of East Fife, I remember watching us beat them pre season at start of Anelka season and thinking we looked pretty decent Shocked

Can see we are still short of a few championship type players. Time running out before season starts so hopefully IM can do quick business and get them match fit and ready.

Team being hamstrung thanks to the financial repercussions of the Goodwillie saga, He who made the decision should put his hand in his pocket Laughing

I agree AR - although we may never know how much JMcG pushed the signing or was pushed / cornered into it himself. If the cost came of this year's player-budget, it certainly would not help towards any aspirations of Premiership football - to say the least.

The gaps and weaknesses in the squad were plain to see in the last two games - vacancies for players at the front and the back. We are all (rightly) worrying that we will go into competitive games with an inadequate squad, although there may be more signings before then.

IM did say that if need be, he would wait until the transfer-deadline to get the right players. I would rather that than the disasters we saw last season! Still, it is two months away. That also seems to be the estimate of the latest Vaughan and Matthews would be back.

Progression in last year's League Cup gave us a pay day. We could do with more of the same! The league will be tight again. Nobody thought the Pars would actually go down last season. Nobody thought Arbroath would almost win the league!

While I would hapilly wait until the end of August for the right squad to move forward with, you would hope IM would sort something out to as least progress in the League Cup and steer well clear of the bottom of the Championship for that first month.

It's great to see IM organising friendlies and looking over trialists before signing them - not just handing out two-year contracts willy-nilly!

i am troubled that IM had to opt to try Scott Brown as a centre half, this signals to me that we possibly can't expect a signing in that department until the latter part of the transfer window, if at all?

Not convinced by what we have seen so far but as they are just friendlies i am trying not to read too much into things just yet.

However, we all know this league is very unforgiving if you make a bad start.

My glass is currently half full!!

IM and Aggie will have looked at the fixture list and realised that we have to field a competitive team in the first run of League matches.
It would be nice for the finances if we get a run in League Cup but the League is the priority.
It seems sensible for a new management team to assess what they have before making too many signings and the friendlies perform that function as well as getting the players fit.
It's not just a question of getting players in but also the aspect of considering which players need to go out on loan and even if some need to be encouraged to find another club.
No reason to do otherwise than to look forward to an exciting season!

I think Brown was tried at CB to see if he can do it, if needed.

The populist view towards those expressing concern over the squad and performances at the moment appears to be that they are knicker wetting.

With all the caveats of pre season friendlies thrown in the bottom line is the squad as it stands is inadequate and that's before you take account of Spencer and Matthews missing the seasons start.

Even allowing for 3 or 4 signings over the coming weeks that still would mean 3 or 4 players joining the squad for the start of the season having missed the bulk of pre season training and friendlies. Not perfect for the high press and high fitness ideology.

It's all pretty meh right now tbh.

With all the doom and gloom around at the moment, hopefully expectations will take a big dive.

Thereafter, good results will be a bonus. Wink
I am reserving judgement until after 5 or 6 LEAGUE games.
Then, should results dictate, I will willingly jump on the bandwagon. Very Happy
