Is a captain really that necessary? Surely IM is the “captain”. He sets out how he wants them to play and, along with his assistant, he directs, motivates and criticises as the match is played. I have never understood the need for a captain apart from tossing a coin and picking what direction to play in.

Technically, he’s the player authorized to discuss matters with the Ref/Officials.

The manager cannot possibly hear what is being said to and between players from the dugout. The captain can defuse situations as they happen and not have to wait for any length of time for the manager to get involved.

As has been previously stated, leadership comes from leaders, no leaders in the team is like a rudderless ship!

Players NEED somebody to look up to and to whom they can talk to about football matters out-with actual match situations.
People often “ need” to talk to someone about personal matters. Going to your “boss” is often not in an individual’s mind. These matters maybe personal and/or professional and a respected peer may often be a better 1st choice.

Captains can and should be a conduit used to communicate with the manager and or coaches.
A really good Captain can and often will be instrumental in the outcome of a match.
A good captain can and will effect the performance of all those around them.
If you have a really good one, they are worth their weight in gold. ( or points).

Is pre-season favourite Rossco still favourite to take over as the new captain ?
I suspect not. Won't IM want to start the new league campaign with the new captain installed and playing? Why wait for a guy who , following his return to full fitness, will have enough of a job trying to battle his way into the starting eleven? Rossco must regret that his op didn't take place at the end of last season.

You're thinking of rugby, SFA refs don't allow anyone to speak to them.

Liam Dick has been captain in quite a few of the pre season games has he not? He certainly was against Kelty. Assume he's been showing some decent leadership qualities in training.

Think Murray said it wouldnt be Berra, given his coaching role.

For me a captain should be chosen by his team mates and no one else, as much as someone the manager can trust with instructions and information, the team also have to respect them. Though in saying that, ideally you probably want every player to be a captain and designate one of them to do the "on-pitch" stuff.

Of course under the laws of the game the captain receives no special privileges.

IM interview: ''We will nail down someone (as captain ) eventually, but we are still looking.''

Quite a bit of chat about appointing a new captain.

Tbh I though Easton played the captain role very well constantly tly motivating the players and keeping their heads up when they made a mistake or had a poor shot he kept heads high and for me that's a vital part of the role keep the team motivated

No player has worn the captain's armband more than once during the games so far, so it looks like Ian Murray is trying various options as he said.

Dunbar = Berra
QoS = Brown
Kelty = Dick
Alloa = Gullan replaced by Ross replaced by Zanatta
Peterhead = Easton
