As announced on our website last night, Raith Rovers FC can confirm that we have signed David Goodwillie from Clyde FC.

David is a proven goal scorer, and this will be his second stint with the club, having previously played for us on loan from Dundee United during season 2007-08.

As with all new signings, the club has carefully considered our position as a Community Club and we completely respect the differing views among fans and stakeholders, many of whom we have spoken to directly in the past 24 hours and are continuing to engage with.

As David has previously played for Raith Rovers earlier in his career, we consider him to be part of the Raith Rovers Football Club. The management team is familiar with David’s career and background and – in particular – his footballing ability. That is our foremost consideration, and we believe that he will strengthen the Raith Rovers playing squad.

Please be assured that as a community football club we fully acknowledge this signing has divided opinion amongst our loyal fans and commercial stakeholders; we aim to rebuild that trust.

While acknowledging the gravity of what happened ten years ago, as a club we fully support and encourage rehabilitation, and many factors influenced our signing. But first and foremost, this was a football related decision.

Not even a single condemnation of violence against woman and Raiths stance against it. Pathetic. Those who wrote that should be ashamed. And resign.

I'm getting fed up with this bandwagon, by which I mean all those wishing to hang a man who was not convicted in a criminal court because the evidence was not there.
Read the reports, they are available in various archives, the same Daily Record that is joining in the furore printed that he (Goodwillie) sat on the end of the bed and she performed a sex act on him, also that Robertson was an old school friend of hers. I will paraphrase here, but the Lord Advocate said on the balance of probabilities she was unable, through alcohol, to consent or deny theri 'advances' and that she was more articulate in the hearing.

I am not condoning violence to women or any other person but there are reasons this did not go criminal, think about that.

Val McDermid has done this club a huge injustice and left herself open to legal action with her twitter posts, she has induced more damage to this club than I thought any one person could ever do and has left the club in a perilous position by her ill advised words. Apparently she loves the club so much she destroyed it with one statement.

Convicted in a civil court though. Guilty is guilty no matter what court makes the decision

Sorry but you don't get convicted in a civil court you get found for or against. When there is insufficient evidence for the crown to pursue a criminal case and individual may file a civil suit for compensation for the wrongs they feel they have endured. There is no requirement for corroboration of any evidence or testimony and the bar for being found against is significantly lower than that of a criminal court.

clutching at straws RZ. convicted/found for/liable......still result in a punishment for being GUILTY. I think we just need to agree to disagree and sit at different ends of this debate.

Nothing in the statement brings me back into the fold. Address the elephant, not a shred of remorse for anything but his pocketbook.

Said it elsewhere but those who sanctioned this fiasco should rectify it.

If as I suspect that the contract cannot be reversed, then all board members (I'm assuming Mill & Clark didn't and that's why they resigned) who voted for signing THAT player should get the personal cheque books out and cheques written now to pay up his contract and terminate his involvement at SP.

Sacking McGlynn & Smith will be problematic if it turns out he didn't want THAT player (unlikely) and even if he did want him, as the board fully backed him in the decision, never the less though you'd have to think they have to go.....probably all of them!

Yeah, lets stop with this line of conversation guys, delving into the legality of the incident and the law isn't going to help. The club had a chance with their statement to regain some good will and instead decided to double down on it without making any reference to anything other than "we'll aim to rebuild the trust".

Its too late to rebuild the trust, reversing the decision makes no change to whats transpired, the damage is done. Sacking the player doesn't bring those who now feel alienated back to the club as if nothing happened, those bridges are burned and those individuals and groups no longer want the association.

All that they can do now is accept it and individually pay the revenue shortfall until such time as it can be recovered by other means. The club now need to take every bit of negative publicity on the chin because they made this decision in the first place. The club have lost every bit of goodwill previously provided to them and that statement says they're ok with that.

Thats not the point

He believed he was not guilty so why would you expect him to show remorse?
