Should footballers and sportsman/women in general take the knee?

South African cricketer Quinton De Koch was branded racist for reufsing to take the knee.

What's everybody's view?

Discuss.

People should do whatever they believe is right within the confines of the law. If someone doesn't take the knee it won't colour my opinion of their character but I also don't think anyone should criticised if they wish to make that gesture.

Was in the middle of typing similar but what Castle said.

Unfortunately, perception seems to win out over truth, players not performing the same gesture will always be assumed as taking an opposing view when its not always the case.

Agree with you all there.

Although I have to say I was a bit concerned and disappointed with Quinton De Koch (a great cricketer)

Not getting into an argument auld yin but why be a bit disappointed with him?

SA Cricket shouldn't dictate to their players, it should be the players choice whether he chooses to or not.

No one who refuses to take the knee should be called a racist.

I don’t like it and if I were a professional sportsman I would only be doing it (as I suspect many are) to show respect to any teammates who found it important and also to keep ‘negative’ headlines away from me, my team etc..

Got to agree SB. I feel that most sportspeople only take the knee so that they avoid being the target of the the wokey trolls. It should be an individuals personal choice. As usual if you aren't VISUALLY be seen to follow the woke trends, colour, religion, LGBT you are clearly a racist, bigot etc.

I feel a torrent of abuse heading my way. You can THINK what ever you want by you cannot/daren't articulate verbally

There should be no abuse heading your way Alex, you've made a fair comment and overall you are probably right with respect to some players. The fact that players feel they have to take this stance prior to each match just highlights that society is not doing enough to combat racism etc that it still rears its head more often than not. Players should be respected for their choice to either take the stance with team mates or not and should not be judged on that decision. And certainly, they shouldn't be booed for it.

Neither up nor down (no pun intended) at players taking the knee and wouldn't berate a player if they chose not to. Sadly, as Big Alex has alluded to, the chances are they would get lambasted by a select few in the world if they were seen to remain standing. Wilfried Zaha made some good points when he said he was going to continue to remain standing as he felt taking the knee was turning into a generic pre match routine, a hollow gesture if you will, with no indication it was doing anything as black players were still receiving abuse regardless.

The problem is then it appears an admission of an inability to solve the basic issue.

surely its all about personal choice. like wearing a poppy or rainbow laces. If you want to do it then fine and if not then also fine. You dont have to make any gesture to show you arent racist, homophobic or whatever. There will always be a minority who are going to cause issues and its always the minority who have the loudest voice.

I am beginning to think it's time to stop it, or at least try something different.

In the beginning it was a great idea and a sound gesture, now I fear it has become commonplace and as such has lost some of the clout/sentiment behind it. Also I fear it gives the biggots and racists a banner to rise to and something to draw on when they get the chance (thinking of certain forgiven fans in the last Qual's).

I think the "Kick racism out" campaign last week has more enduring power behind it, but if I'm honest I think that probably needs some freshening up too.
Personally I'm all for players walking off if they've been abused in ANY way, this should be a tolerant, modern world with a multicultural society.
