Yes, but it's clearly still split, I reckon Jammer was more than capable for next season, as for injuries, they can and do happen but goal keepers don't tend to have as many as outfield players, thus the reason they play much longer. My opinion would be that he'd be an asset for the next campaign and probably the next there after but the new powers that be obviously have a different plan with a view to longevity and it's their ideas that matter.

I believe that’s the point. As I’ve suggested elsewhere, I suspect the planning is focused upon a drive for promotion in two or three years, and the powers that be may feel they want the new keeper in place now for the journey.

There will be moments when we really miss Jamma at his best. Then again McGurn had his rise and inevitable shelf-life too. With Jamma gone now, either way, the club has just got to secure the best choice in a keeper (maybe a bit of a mentor and organiser too) - and sort out that damn defence to keep the pressure off him!

Neil, you make a very good point which is very often missed by many. We have TEN players in front of the Keeper, yet when he is picking the ball out of the net it is so easy to blame him for it being there in the first place!

Our defence was dicey to say the least last year. I personally noticed the difference that young O'reardon had been making to its solidity when it pretty much collapsed after he returned to stoke. I definitely feel we need an experienced CB marshalling the younger guys around him for this year.

I would also like to point out that Goal Keepers are sometimes injured because they come into heavy contact with their own post, or indeed an opponent's boot. This is brought on by collisions during a game, and has absolutely nothing to do with the player's fitness or indeed his age!

36 is not really old for a keeper. I am reminded of Dino Zoff and Lev Yashin putting up great performances between the sticks in World Cup Finals and they were both much older than that.

Let's hope the new new Board do have a plan in place for this important position.

The reality is very few keepers play to age 36, let alone older, at the higher levels. There were only 5 keepers in their thirties in the Championship this year, out of about 25 or so...only three were age 35+, and Jamma was the oldest. In the Premiership there are a few more, but they also have a lot more keepers on the books.

As for Zoff and Yashin, Zoff I’ll give you, but Yasmin’s last true World Cup appearance was in 1966, when he was younger than Jamma is now. he never played in a final (perhaps you mean the actual World Cup tournament finals? Also, Yashin was the third choice keeper/coach in the 1970 World Cup, and I don’t believe he appeared..)

And I'll raise you a Gianluigi Buffon and an Oliver Kahn.
The former is 45 and still playing in Serie B for Parma. The latter was 37 when he played his last international game for Germany.
All Jamma had to do was to perform at the second level in Scotland, nowhere near the level of the two mentioned.

Neuer now aged 37, Still up there vying to be Bayern and Gernany No1

Leighton retired from International football at 40
Shilton played his last England game aged 39
Peter Schmeichel retired at Man City aged 40 and from Internationals aged 39.
Both Edwin van der Sar and David Seamans last internationals were aged 38.
Alan McGregor last international aged 36, last SPL Rangers game aged 41.
Ray Clemence And Andy Goram retired from internationals aged 35.

Over the decades many keepers have kept playing into their late 30s and early 40's at a reasonable level. Stuart Kennedy, John Burrage, Alan Rough, Bobby Gedded, Ally Donaldson, Ernie McGarr were all what I considered to be (at the time) old, old men I've watched on the pitch at Starks Park.

All of which would tend to suggest that the goalkeeping good and the great can (and do) play long into their twilight years long after the time that the guys they started their footballing journey with have long since hung up their boots.

But what others do and have done counts for nothing with regard to RRFC and who replaces Jammer. He's gone there's a new man coming in and whether it's with a view to the future or just a view to cutting costs (or both) we'll have to wait and see.

Hamish McAlpine was scoring winners at Kilmarnock for us at the age of 39 and saving penalties at Ibrox after his 40th birthday.

Of course, of course!
Great call SG.
I'd totally forgotten about Hamish's exploits.
A legend for both us and the Arabs.

You mention all these keepers, but for every one of them there are 100+ who don’t play until 30, and probably 30+ that are out by 35. There are keepers who can play until they’re 40’s, but there is also the question of pay. We offered Jamma a contract for less money, he declined it…the question we’ll likely never know the answer to is who of our signings are here only because we let Jamma go?

Let’s face reality, the new team at SP aren’t afraid to pay for talent, but they evaluated Jamma’s expiring rate of pay, and didn’t see value in it for RRFC…that says to me that we were paying too much. MacDonald could have stared for at least seven of the other nine Championship teams the last three years, so we were likely paying very well. Penny wise and pound foolish cuts both ways, we’ll see what happens.

Tex you clearly cant let this pass yet you cannot seem to grasp the outstanding truth that goalkeepers generally play longer than most and the good ones play the longest.

Yes lots of keepers play a long time and for every one that quits at 40 there are a hundred that quit before 30 and guess what another hundred that quit before 25 and another hundred that quit at 20.....why?

Because they aren't the ones playing at the top of the game or even close to it, Raith aren't at the very top of the game but were very fortunate to have Jammer, a keeper who has played SPL for Killie and Hearts, been to Hampden finals 4 times, won the Scottish and played U21 for Scotland, now you just don't do that if you aren't any good.

You batter on about the new guys at SP not wanting him and everyone has agreed that this seems to be the case, some agree with the new boards idea and others don't that's people prerogative, yet you continue to go on about the age of goalkeepers as it it's a real issue, are you ageist????

Now be a good boy do what you have to do, get the last word in and let this go.

I wasn't on Tx's side last season when he suggested that we might be looking for a new keeper this season. But , the truth is that none of us know what Jamma earned last season and was wanting matched going forward. Maybe even JMcG hadn't done his sums and found out what Jamma's escalated earnings would be. It does seem , in the event, that Jamma was willing to negotiate downwards , if the Courier report was to be believed, but I watched him at SP and he looked like a guy saying goodbye.
We must move on and I hope we have identified a commanding new keeper. I don't want another season with my heart in my mouth every time the opposition win a free kick in our half. Defending those is down to the whole team, of course, but the main responsibility rests with the keeper and the centre halves to win the ball in the air. If we sign a youngish keeper , the recruitment of an experienced, organising -type centre back is even more essential.
Most seem to be ageist and focusing on Jamma being 37, but there may be other reasons why he is no longer with The Rovers.

Franco

I stumbled across this site "Salary Sport" on the internet, and if the figures are to be believed? Jamie came 11th in the squad salaries table only earning £560 per week (£29,120 per year). I would have thought he was at least worth that to keep him for another year?

Having said that, I realise this boat has now sailed. I simply thought it an interesting document (if it can be believed?) given the topic .

I totally agree Franco, Jamie was saying goodbye to us all in that final game at Starks. Fingers crossed for an experienced keeper and centre half(s) for the forthcoming new season to strengthen our line of defence.
The signings so far look like making us an exciting attacking team, but we need to stop losing avoidable goals from free kicks and also tighten up in the first 10 minutes of the 2nd half.
A solid defending duo in the middle who complement each other is required please.

Very interesting, HR, but I am sceptical regarding its accuracy. The club wouldn't divulge these figures. How would they be found out? An individual player willing to leak what he knows would not know every other wage.
