I was really sad to read today that Jamie wanted to stay at the Rovers. Apparently he was made a "take it or leave it" offer for another year but at a reduced salary. He did not accept that offer, however according to the Courier article, he was not contacted again for any sort of negotiation and was deemed to want away.
He said he really wanted to stay, and was in no way looking for a wage rise, however he would find it hard to accept a pay cut. Given the current cost of living crisis, I can see how this might affect his decision. How many of us here would accept a pay cut to carry out the same job role?
Unlike some other posters, I really rated Jamie and I think the board might have at least tried to negotiate with him?
In saying all this, I accept it was simply a newspaper's report. However, if true, I just think we ought to have tried a wee bit harder to keep him.

That’s the problem with an aging player in a money game. He’s got the experience and credentials to command a good salary, but he’s also shown a little sign of being more vulnerable to injuries. I will however take issue with the Board might have tried to negotiate with him…when you deliver a “take it or leave it” offer, you simply cannot revisit that offer unless there is a significant change of conditions. As soon as players are aware a final offer isn’t necessarily final, they have an incentive to not agree quickly…maybe Brad was expecting a better offer too, and when it wasn’t forthcoming he elected to try the market?
It’s clear the Rovers have changed tactics in negotiations for salaries, and if it’s a longer contract vice a larger contract, Jamie would have been a terrible buy. As for how many would accept a salary cut, how many of us as in a job where physical performance is as critical to maintaining a position? |

Football is a harsh sport at times.
This is one of those ‘gotta trust the management’ who must surely have a replacement in the pipeline?
Cracking goalkeeper, consummate professional and role model. Can only wish him all the best and hope the fans get a chance to acknowledge his contributions in the flesh some time soon in the future… |

I suspect they may have offered him terms as a back up keeper with a view to bringing someone younger in, but only offered him terms in light of his service to the club, He can go to league 1 or 2 and be first choice for a season or two yet, if the club has premier league aspirations in a few years time, a 36 yo keeper is unlikely to be first choice.

36 is no age for a position where experience counts for more.
McGregor (41), Gordon (40), Marshall (3 , Hart (36), not saying Jammer is Thier equals but he was imo the best in our league and could have had a gig in the prem.
If the board are looking for a longer term replacement and have one in mind then fair enough but I would have gone the extra mile here.

Point taken, but let me counter your examples. Each and every one of them has had the best of everything placed at their feet, nutrition, therapy, training, science, rehab. Jammer has not had such luxuries and therefore is not even close to the conditioning the guys you mentioned are in so, his body is less able to deal with the rigours of even championship level.
He has been a great keeper for us no doubt, but he is not one I would select as first choice going forward, he is probably 7 or 8 years too old for the future planning of sustaining a place in the premier league

Nobody is/was asking him to be our premier league player but he was more than capable of 1st team football for ourselves at this level for next year or two.
He offered more than being a reliable (often outstanding) goalkeeper… his experience alone isn’t easy to replace.
We have been extremely lucky to have JMac between the posts and his replacement has large gloves to fill!
I’m intrigued to find out his replacement |

I've been a fan of Jamma since he joined The Rovers. I would have been happy to have seen him signed on for another season.
However, I don't know what wage he was on last season, with the benefit of JMcG's escalator clause. I suspect this was the contract which got out of hand.
Moreover, our defence had a serious weakness from deadball deliveries.Jamma isn't the biggest keeper and coming for crosses into the box is not one of his strengths. So there may be a trade-off : better command of our box, but a keeper who may not bring off so many "unexpected" saves( a keeper who excels in every area will not be playing in the Scottish Championship). Clearly , all the defenders must accept responsibility for our most costly defensive flaw last season, but that includes keepers.
Incidentally , Admin, should Jamie and also Regan Hendry not be moved to the former players category? |

Not for me, not a chance. 36, injuries catching up and a physique not capable of handling another season at our level.
Need to be planning for the future and it's not him, no place for sentiment when promotion is the future, football is a business now, no time for being nice. Whether we like it or not

This.
According to Fife Today, AB reveals there will be a "fair few signings" next week before the players return on Mon 12th June and one is a goalkeeper. We need to be getting someone that can give 2/3 years service and maybe longer. To be honest, i don't think JMcD would've given us that. |
