On this day in 1963 Hugh Shaw was sacked as Rovers manager.

I was 11 years old and it was the year that our family left KDY for pastures new. From when I was about 6 I was always at SP selling programmes, played there too with the BB. My old man was NOT a football man and couldn't understand why I was so keen.

He used to describe Rovers as "eleven tatties on a Shaw" Question Question Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes

Quote:
Following promotion the previous season Rovers took on Celtic at Parkhead drawing the match 2-2 in front of a crowd of 32000. Rovers fielded two ex-Celts in Joe McLaughlin and Andy Young. Rovers twice came from behind in the game with Willie Penman netting on each occasion. The game is most notable for an injury to Willie Penman. Rovers trainer Willie Hunter raced onto the park to administer smelling salts but the semi-conscious Penman took a deep drink of the salts. Penman was taken away to the dressing room where he was violently sick but insisted on returning to the action!

When I read that I couldn't stop thinking of this.

On this day 1894 Rovers first game at Stark's Park!
125 years ago and still playing on the same wee bit of ground hemmed in by the railway and the street. Very Happy
Not sure if the street existed back then but it wouldn't have been open ground for too long as the town expanded quickly then.
It's a long time for any organisation to be operating from the one site.
Long may the club prosper and flourish along with all the ups and downs of playing football for many decades to come.
This might just be another notable season in that long history.
Hope so! Very Happy

Map link from between 1888 and 1913 shows the road and Stark’s. I’ve seen other maps that show the road predates the San Starko.

Cheers Tx.
Just couldn't be bothered trawling through OS online maps to verify.
Much appreciated.

Before Pratt Street the road was called (IIRC) Clachers Brae.
I'll check if the name is correct when I get on the work computer.

I asked a relative about this and here's what he says:

The 1855 survey with a slider to show present day aerial image - 164 years ago, and the road pattern is familiar, thus pre-dating Starks Park.

https://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/#zoom=16&lat=56.1010&lon=-3.1696&layers=5&b=1

The road in question appears to be recorded as Callochy Brae.

Similarly on the town plan of the same year.

https://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/#zoom=17&lat=56.0992&lon=-3.1675&layers=92&b=1

The 1894 survey shows a football ground, and the street is Pratt Street.

https://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/#zoom=17&lat=56.1004&lon=-3.1697&layers=168&b=1

The OS used to record features in ledgers (scroll down for the typewritten version)

https://scotlandsplaces.gov.uk/digital-volumes/ordnance-survey-name-books/fife-and-kinross-shire-os-name-books-1853-1855/fife-and-kinross-shire-volume-108/6

Callochy Brae: "Leading N. [North] Westerly from the end of Pratt Street.
Part of a public highway extending for about 7 chains N.N.W. [North North West] from the end of Pratt Street the hill of brae is a little curved and rather steep adjoining the above named street."

https://scotlandsplaces.gov.uk/digital-volumes/ordnance-survey-name-books/fife-and-kinross-shire-os-name-books-1853-1855/fife-and-kinross-shire-volume-108/5

Pratt Street: "Leading N.W. [Northwest] from the S. [South] end of High Street.
A street extending from the West Bridge to Callochy Brae the dwelling houses therein are occupied by weavers & persons employed in Mills adjoining it is clean Macadamised and partly drained."

PS

Callochy Brae is a much more attractive name than Pratt Street, why was it changed?

Also if the name hadn't ben changed I wouldnt have to put up with those ''funny'' remarks by Pars fans!

I must admit I did wonder, given when the 3rd round is usually played.

25 years ago today, as injury time beckoned, Stevie Crawford was sent through one on one with St Johnstone goalkeeper Alan Main. He slipped the ball through the advancing goalkeeper's legs to give Rovers a 2-1 win, leaving the club on the cusp of a league and league cup double.
For the 3rd time that season, McDiarmid Park was the scene of wild celebrations in the Rovers end.

Happy days.
