Their Glenrothes shop is to be food only (same as the retail park).
If the food shoppers from the High Street branch use the retail park it'll make it busier.
The loss of BHS was different as they had their own issues, but as far as the loss of M&S, Next etc from the High Street is concerned and the failure to attract the likes of Primark, people in Kirkcaldy have only themselves to blame.
Time and time again I hear people saying they're away to Edinburgh, Livingston, The Gyle and even Dunfermline for their Christmas shopping or because they nerd a new outfit for a wedding. They're probably the same people who are shedding crocodile tears at the demise of Kirkcaldy high street. _________________ Dougie Hill

They probably have to go there because the facilities they want aren't available on the High Street. How this came about is probably due to mis-management by the various councils beit Fife or Kirkcaldy. |

I'll give Debenhams, Boots, WH Smith and Burtons a maximum of two more years on the High Street.
If you were to give town planning and economics students a lecture on how to ruin a town, Kirkcaldy would be your blueprint. _________________ Dougie Hill

Exactly, the planners, the greed of the landowners rents and Fife Council high rates, and the useless groups that tried to save the High Street have all FAILED the people of Kirkcaldy and all the people who did come along to shop in the High Street.
All contributed to the death of the High Street. Putting large retail parks and supermarkets well away from the High Street also contributed.
Still these supermarkets are needed as we wll shop there.
Banks - PAH. Why dont they all share one largish building and serve the customers as we all need a bank from time to time. |

The retail parks will be the next to go Tam, this isn't just a Kdy problem it's nationwide and by and large it's the march of time that's the major force in action.
Technology will have its way.
TV didn't just kill radio, it's done for cinema and football (comparatively speaking). Internet killing off terrestrial tv, killed off Video/dvd rental and now doing same to retail.
Greed, corruption and a general lack of ambition and abilities have killed off all the high st's. _________________ Competitive goals: Vaughan 5, Smith 4, Easton 3, Hamilton 2, Dick 1, Gullan 1, Masson 1, Mitchell 1, Mullin 1, Stanton 1, Watson 1, OG's 1, |

It's easy to forget that there used to be the Woolwich Building Society, the Alliance and Leicester, and the Bradford and Bingley on the high street. Santander took over all three so this closure leaves a bigger hole than maybe first thought and a drastic reduction in choice for the customer. _________________ Dougie Hill

People need money to spend in shops. Do you know what the job situation is like in Kirkcaldy? I've had 1 job in KDY (for 12 weeks this year) since being made redundant at the end of 2009. I've since only found work in Dunfermline, but mainly in Edinburgh. Kirkcaldy is a dead zone for proper jobs. |
I agree with this. I mainly blame Fife Council for the state of Kirkcaldy. The last time I checked their Plan for Fife or Fife Plan, or whatever it was called, they had Kirkcaldy down as east Fife’s premier shopping destination. They don’t seem to realise that if you want a town to thrive you have to have a few jobs in it. Take those away and make us into a commuter town and there are fewer and fewer people using the shops.
Then there is centralisation of Services. Local and Central Government have been hooked on centralisation of services for 20 years. This also affects towns like Kirkcaldy, as jobs are centralised to other locations.
The baw is truly burst. _________________ This is the year we win the Play-offs. |
