A chap from up here in Lybster by the name of Jack Mowat was one of the many paratroopers that took part in Operation Market Garden aka Battle of Arnhem. Knew him well. Very quiet and very unassuming about his wartime exploits but mad for football and bowls and we've to thank him for having a bowling green in the village. Indeed the green is named after him.

If anyone is going through to Edinburgh on sunday for the remembrance day service at haymarket I will see you there.I am going over on the 9.30am train with some hearts fans to pay our respects to the McCraes Battalion and all those who gave their lives for our freedom.LEST WE FORGET.

Hope you made it through SoW.
Haymarket was fairly full. 1000 order of service books printed and about 8 left according to David Speed the Hearts historian.
Did you go on the march to Tynecastle? Another really big turnout.
I went along with two office bearers from McCraes Trust. Very impressive show put on in Tynecastle stadium. We couldn't stay too long though due to other Trust commitments elsewhere.
It's been a very emotional day all round.

I was there with 2 pals of mine who are hearts fans and was stood across the road from the memorial just outside the scots guards club.I didn't go to tynecastle tho.I saw the rovers chairman laying a wreath on behalf of the club along with many others.Very emotional day indeed.Rab my hearts mate wants to go to Kirkcaldy next year and make a big thing of it along with hearts,raith and other clubs who had players fighting for mcraes.Then have a function or get together afterwards possibly at starks.

I was at Haymarket today and did the walk to Tynecastle. I was impressed with the event in the stadium. I wore our 'Remember' top and received a lot of compliments from Hearts fans about how smart it is. Very disappointing afternoon in Methil yesterday but events like today really do put things in perspective.

Delighted to hear things went well at Tynecastle. It looked to be shaping up well. Our RemembeR strip is iconic as far as the Jambos fans are concerned and many wish their club had come up with something so inspirational.
You might have seen the three of us exiting early as we had to go with the singer of the Hearts of Glory song, Craig Herbertson, on to another event where Craig was to be MC and we were also part of proceedings.

likewise, went across yesterday - fantastic turnout, and good to pick out a few of the McCraes Raith tops in the crowd. The service itself was excellent, and the event at Tynecastle particularly enjoyable

It is with great sadness that we have to report that the lovely lady mayor of Contalmaison, Madame Patricia Leroy, passed away on Feb 6th after an illness bravely borne this last year and a half or so.
The very few of you who have made it out to Contalmaison will probably remember her most from her part in the ceremony, in particular her starting the singing unaccompanied of Le Marseillaise before everyone else joins in.
A wee appreciation of Patricia is to feature in the next home game programme.

An invitation to anyone who wishes to attend.
I'll be on my way back north that day after being at Contalmaison on behalf of the club earlier in the week.

Dear Member, you are invited to,

A COMMEMORATIVE SERVICE WHICH WILL BE HELD IN THE PARISH CHURCH OF ST CUTHBERT, LOTHIAN ROAD, EDINBURGH ON SUNDAY 7 JULY 2019.

The service will commemorate the sacrifice made by men from the City of Edinburgh and surrounding towns who volunteered to join the 16th Royal Scots at the battalion's momentous Usher Hall recruiting launch in November 1914. Three quarters of these volunteers were killed or wounded near the village of Contalmaison on 1 July 1916, the first day of the Battle of the Somme.

At the end of the service a poppy wreath in memory of those who died will be uplifted and piped out of the church. Those attending the service are invited to follow the wreath-bearer and piper up Lothian Road to the McCrae's Battalion commemorative plaque on the steps of the Usher Hall in McCrae's Place, where the wreath will be placed and dedicated.

This Act of Remembrance at the Usher Hall will occur annually in years to come on the Sunday nearest to 1 July.

After the ceremony, you are invited to return to the Lindisfarne Room of St Cuthbert's (at approximately 13.00) for refreshments and a chance to view photographs/footage of the Remembrance Ceremony held on 1 July in the French village of Contalmaison.

ALL ARE WELCOME TO THIS COMMUNITY EVENT, so please feel free to display or pass on the attached notice of the service to your friends.

It is with great sadness that I have to report that the Chairman of the Trust
Lt Col Gary Tait MBE formerly Major Tait passed away this morning having finally succumbed to the cancer he was diagnosed with about a couple of years ago.
He is going to be hugely missed by everyone but in particular his nearest and dearest.
One of life's great guys.

Not to be this year but thinking of those no longer with us and the leisurely lunch I'd be partaking in right now. Wink

Many thanks to everyone involved in presenting the club's Remembrance Day Commemoration.
A very fitting tribute to all who have lost their lives over two world wars and in many other areas of conflict worldwide.
It's been strange not being able to represent the club in France or at Haymarket this year.
There's '....Always Next Season' ....to coin a well known phrase.😊
