That's always good Scotty, the Central Bar in St Andrews is even better.

How is the Cross Keys public bar these days? Is it still in existence? Over 25 years ago it used to have reasonably good beer with a strong local customer base, rather than 'Varsity Hooray types. Remember going in one day with the old man and meeting Tip Anderson, Palmer's old caddie, who was in along with some friends. One man was complaining about not having enough readies to pay his electric bill and Tip(who was probably about 70 at the time) offered to pay it once he started work on the links in about two weeks from the day. At that moment the man's daughter comes in with the lad's shopping and takes up the vodka offered and starts to go on about prices which then becomes a general discussion about money. She stops mid sip and turns to Tip and states "Tip you dinnae need tae work. You must have made a million over the years with Palmer and Tony Lema? (Past Open winners for those not in the know). Tip being all philosophical and nursing his pint states " I won't deny it. I have. But the bug**r is I've spent two!"
Both of us near choked on our drink and just about fell off the seat.
Just such a brilliant response. Laughing
A memory of the old man that always will stick with me. Happy days indeed. Very Happy

Yip it is still there less than 100 or so metres from the Central Bar.

Went in it once and it was a poor looking place compared to Laffertys or the Central Bar.

Good story though Embow.

Unsure Zico Bill, its a great idea and its being discussed with the Trust committee.

Trouble is it is a huge effort with very little profit and some poor attendances however, they are always great fun for the beer experts who do come along and sup some delicious real ales.

Tam as the one who had the initial idea I thought it was actually picking up .The first one was a disaster I admit that, the second was better in that we did make money, the third did ok I think.I for one would like it to go ahead and yes I do know how much work goes into organising the event Tom Phillips is the unsung hero for the three that have taken place so far.

Agree Zico, there are others as well as yourself and Tom, Steve W does an amazing amount of work bringing in snacks, alcohol, etc., the lads who serve the beer and volunteers who man the snack bar and doors.

Of course now as part of the license the place needs security around.

Personally I think the venue is dreadful, and unfortunately the weather has rarely been kind along with the grey & bleakness of the south stand concourse doesn't fit a proper real ale venue.

It keeps the ales at the correct temperatures and costs nothing for the cooling breeze. If your cold get a hot pie inside you especially the curry ones. Laughing
