I know this has been mentioned a few times in the past, however I was wondering what people would think about a Rovers TV website? I know that the highlights are put onto the main site and when I asked a few months ago the club were very un-keen to about putting them on a pay site.

So, what I was thinking was a site which would have
* Interviews with players, management and the board
* Interviews with former players
* A regular newsletter (say every mid-week)
* Groupon-type offers from local businesses

This is still at the ideas stage at the moment and there are a few challenges associated with it, however, I would like to hear your views and if anybody would be able to help out.

Great idea so best getting the right people on board to make it easier for you to do it but sounds good altho not sure about a pay site.

To be honest I cant see there being a massive demand for it

The features you mention would be great on the official website but for me personally to pay a subscription I'd want exclusive news and extended highlights

How much roughly had you thought about charging?

This was already tried a few years ago, in 2005, and it failed miserably. John Drysdale introduced the idea and it was on a site named raithrovers.net which I also ran, or added the content to, to be more specific, but it was 'owned' by an independant company, and fans who logged onto the website during that time will recall it was accessed via a wee log in box on the front page where the 'Member Club' banner is now. The match videos and my picture page were shifted from the main site to the pay site during that time, and a big plus at the time was that the videos were streamed, like they are now, whereas on the main site, you had to download the file to your computer to watch it. The company that supplied the service went bust, although it was failing long before that, and everything on the site was lost. It also ran during the early days of Gordon Dalziel's time as manager and carried exclusive video interviews by Tony Fimister who went along to training sessions as well as down to Stark's Park and did extended interviews with first team players and management, a long interview with Shaun Dennis when he retired, and Laurie Ellis when he came back for his second stint, and he also did loads of interviews with up and coming young players such as Stephen Tulloch and Colin Leiper, and any new signings.

That's not to say that it wouldn't work if tried again, but even though it was hailed as a brilliant idea at the time, it didn't last very long, and it certainly didn't generate anything like the income everyone thought it would.

I know for a fact that some current users of Fantalk were members and I'm sure they will remember it.

I would also add that it wasn't John Drysdale's fault that it failed, it was more that, once the novelty of the new service wore off, people lost interest.

Agree with Jim it's like a lot of ideas that fail because a lot of enthusiastic people who want to set up and run sites like this lose their enthusiasm very quickly then dissapear. When you set up a service that people have to pay for you have to be 100% committed for the long term not just for a month or so. As I remember it the .NET pay site was to have lots of items posted regularly on it and they disapeared within a few weeks and when I tried to get interviews the management team at the time got a bit annoyed and the club wanted the money from the pay site but weren't prepared to pay for equipment to do the job properly, I had to provide it myself so their was little or no investment in the idea to make it work most of all the investment of time. The biggest problem was that there was already a great site providing everything free to the fans and the .Net site only nicked the best bits from the already established site but failed to recognise that it takes a heck of a lot of time to run and fill a good website like Raith already had and as I remember it the people who failed to come up with the goods were full time employees of the club and the people who did what they had promised to do were outsiders or unpaid volunteers. And finally if you run a service that is funded by the fee paying customers they will quite rightly expect a professional final product that looks as good as the BBC ITV or Sky services provide. Could Raith Rovers provide that without the correct investment and would that initial investment wipe out the long term benefits that might or might not be achieved?

I remember the .net site well and I always though that the hosting software was very poor to say the least. The content was good, but it was presented very, very poorly (that was the company (spidernetworks?) fault and not those who ran the service)

I have a few ideas, and would want to run (if it happens) as an arms length venture to the club, with the profit going to them.

I do appreciate the honest feedback. I do think that some football fans can be fickle and want everything for nothing.

I would also like to state that a while ago I offered to create and host a pay-site for match highlights and interviews (all funded by myself) with all monies going to the club. The club decided that they wanted to keep the service free to benefit the fans. Admirable, well I thought so.

I've always wondered 'if' the highlights of each home tie weren't available on the website (or didn't appear until later than the sun/mon).... would more people venture through the turnstiles on a sat afternoon?

I know plenty rovers 'fans' that don't go much on a saturday afternoon yet can't wait for the highlights Rolling Eyes

I know it isn't fair on all the folk that would be there 'if they could', just wondering if even delaying the highlights maybe until the thu/fri would encourage a few more people to show up for the games knowing they have to wait almost a week to see the goals/talking points for themselves?

You guys know about this site don't you ?

http://www.raithroversabroad.net/index.php#

Other teams have set up these type of sites ( Falkirk TV) . I will be subscribing to Rovers abroad , but I will be happier when it goes to live tv of the games .

Wouldn't make any difference because they still wouldn't go knowing that they will see the video whenever it is shown.

what about a season DVD for Fundraising??
we could have combined comentary from Raith Aabroad and video from the highlights?
I was thinking along the lines of a christmas offer of last seasons full season 15.00 and the season so far 10.00 with another from that release to the season end 10.00
So every christmas a choice of two dvd's ? 1/2 the season and last season.
and if the video boys did some shots of the crowd/ folks walking into the ground/ interviews with fans.....grab a player 30 minutes before kick off for a 5 minute meet the fans and sign autographs and video it all.
We could have a bumper DVD that folks would want to pay for to see themselves etc...

IT WONT HAPPEN UNLESS FOLK ARE GOING TO PUT THE TIME IN TO DO IT.

The rights package we have agreed with the SFL only allows us to stream the commentary. As it stands I don't think we can record it to go over the highlights. It's a pity as highlights with commentary would be a great thing.

I know there has to be some control of copyright and broadcasting of games, but surely, given the perilous financial state of Scottish football at present and for the forseeable future, the SFL have to try to make things easier for member clubs to raise revenue from DVDs etc rather than putting obstacles in the way.
